I am seeking information on JOHN & ELIZABETH MELLETT (NEE CONWAY) who had a hotel in ROUNDSTONE on the 1901 & 1911 Census. Elizabeth & John were protestants who married in Kilcummin, Galway in 1855 & Elizabeth's father was Richard Conway & her residence was given as Castle Kirke. In 1901 John's occupation was given as Scripture Reader. Some of their children emigrated to Canada & one, Henrietta Marion, a Canadian army nurse. was drowned when the RMS Leinster was sunk by a u-boat off Dun Laoghaire in 1918. She is buried in Mount Jerome cemetery Dublin. I believe from a reference in an on-line book that the Mellett's hotel may have been called 'Ivy House'. I am particularly interested in Elizabeth's Conway family but would be very grateful for any information about this family & their descendants.

Hi
Thank you for your message.
I have forwarded your request to a volunteer who may be able to offer some assistance or advice.
Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland.
Kind regards,

Doreen,
Regarding your post, I can tell you a little about the Mellett family members who emigrated to Canada. Henrietta appears to have emigrated to Canada in 1908 in the company of her sister Susan, who had earlier travelled to do church work in the Yukon. Susan there met and married Rev. R.J. Bowen, who was an Anglican minister in the north. They then moved to London Canada, where Henrietta settled as well. Henrietta joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force as a nurse in January 1918, and was killed in October 1918, just a month before the Armistice, when the RMS Leinster was torpedoed:

Another sibling, Walter John, emigrated to Canada around this time also. He also served for Canada in WW I. Walter died around 1941 in London Ontario, and was my grandfather. Walter had three children. One son is still living. My father and his sister have passed away
Susan had a son, Dr. Richard Bowen, and died in 1960 I believe, having had a very adventurous life:

I know very little about the family in Roundstone, or those who stayed in Ireland beyond what little can be gleaned from the 1901 and 1911 census. Any information you may have gathered on the Roundstone Melletts (and Conways) would be gratefully received.
Regards,
Bruce Mellett

How lovely to hear from you Bruce!
My great grandma was Kate Louisa Conway, sister of your great grandma Elizabeth Mellett (nee Conway), which makes us 3rd cousins. I have lots of information about your Mellett family & recently visited your great grandparent's grave in Roundstone & Henrietta's grave in Dublin. Two of your grandfather's sisters are buried with their parents & two sisters & a brother are buried with Henrietta in Mount Jerome Dublin (I have photos of all the graves that I can let you have if you wish).
I have done a lot of research on the Melletts & Conways in the last few months, which I will be very happy to share with you. My email address is dopreston@hotmail.com if you would like to contact me direct. I am also in touch with Susan Bowen's granddaughter in Canada.
Many thanks for contacting me
