I am trying to find information on the Mellifont family. My great-grandmother was Maria (or Marie) Mellifont and married my great-grandfather, John Barry, in 1886. According to their marriage registration, they were married in St. Colman's cathedral in Cobh. Maria's residence is listed as Rushbrook and her profession as a servant. Her father's profession was a steward. They had 2 children, my grandfather James Patrick who died in 1955, and a daughter Catherine Mary who was born in 1889 but died 18 months later.

Maria was born in 1855 and her parents were James and Eileen (nee Linehan or Lenihan) who married in 1838. Maria also had 2 brothers Michael and David, and a sister Ellen.

Maria, her husband John, and her son James Patrick lived in Windmill Road, Cork in 1911. This information is from the 1911 census. John died on January 4th, 1926, and unfortunately, I have no information on Maria after the 1911 census.

I have seen John's death notice in the Cork Examiner and there is no mention of any of his family. I am not sure if this was normal at the time, but the notice was "cold and dark". I have found John's grave and he has no headstone. In John's death registration he is listed as married, so Maria was still alive at this time.

My father's other grandmother was born  Mary Devonshire, which is another unpopular name, and I will research that at a later date.
