Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Have you tried looking into Michael and Julia's emigration? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. If you knew where they arrived it may be a good place to find information and perhaps even an exact place of origin. For immigration information in the US go to the US National Archives website at the following site:
http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/
You could also try to find Michael's Naturalisation papers. For information on these follow this link:
http://www.archives.gov/research/naturalization/index.html
You could also try doing a search of the surnames. The irishtimes website has a search engine that shows how many households had a certain surname in mid 19th century Ireland. I did a search for Kelliher, however no results were returned. I than searched for Keliher. To see these results and also for information on the name and other variations of it, follow this link:

Perhaps if you know Michael and Julia's parents names you could try searching fro them in Griffith's Valuation. This was a property survey carried out between 1848-1864. Although it doesn't offer any genealogical information it can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place. You can search it here:

You could also search the earlier land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found here:
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
Some other websites which may be useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/
The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm
Family Search: https://familysearch.org/
Census Records (1901/1911): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
I hope that this is helpful. Remember to post any new information you find. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Kind regards,
