I am interested in information on a Michael Kelly.   I was in Ireland in August last year and I did find a Michael Kelly memorial stone in the grave yard of a Church in Clonfert Co Ballinasloe. He passed away on the 23rd of August 1864. The memorial stone was erected by his son Pat Kelly. I was hoping you may be able to shed some light on this person please.

  • Hello, more information would be great? Pic of memorial, age of Michael Kelly when he died, is he a relative or are you just interested.

  • Hi Catherine,

Thank you for offering to help.

My great grandmother Bridget Cummins, who travelled alone and pregnant to Australia in September 1864, named her son Samuel Henry Winters, after her apparently deceased husband. I can find no trace of her husband, named as Samuel Winters, or where Bridget may have lived in Ireland. But I do have distant male cousins (both Kelly’s) who live in the vicinity of Ballinasloe. These cousins have identified a Cummins family that lived in Ballinasloe. I have done a YDNA test and my paternal line has been confirmed as belonging to the Kelly clan. I was interested in the Michael Kelly’s headstone as his time of death matched Bridget’s story.

The church is the Church of Ireland St Brendan’s Cathedral Clonfert – I have attached a photo of his head stone.
