I would like to find the parents of Michael Leary who married Mary Greany on 1 March 1859 in Abbeydorney. The church record only lists their names and marriage date (no parents or witnesses'). Civil Records for Catholics are not available before 1864. I am at a loss as to how to proceed! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
As far as I know they had 8 children:
Mary Leary Born 1 Oct 1860
Catherine Leary Born 28 Jan 1866
Annie O'Leary B. 6 Nov 1868 Ardfert and Married Edward Slattery Immigrated to Lincoln, Rhode Island, USA
Florence O'Leary Baptised 24 Feb 1871 Ardfert (1st male). Immigrated 1895 to Lincoln, Rhode Island, USA Married Catherine Burke
Nora/Honora O'Leary B. 21 Sept 1873 Ardfert Married Patrick O'Connor Immigrated to Lincoln, Rhode Island, USA
John O'Leary B. 1 Jan 1876 Abbeydorney. Lived in Rhode Island and Chicago, Illinois, USA
Michael O'Leary B. 6 Feb 1878. Lived in Rhode Island and Chicago, Illinois, USA
Thomas Joseph O'Leary B. 11 Dec 1881 Adrahan and immigrated to Lincoln, Rhode Island, USA

Robin:
I looked at the 1852 Co. Kerry Griffiths Valuation head of household data for O'Dorney parish. There was only one Leary listed Mary Leary of Knocknacaska townland. I also found a William Leary and his family living in Knocknacaska townland in the 1901 census. Possibly Mary and/or William are connected to Michael.

Thank you Roger! I will keep these people as candidates for parents. I noticed there were no Greaney's in this area. Any thoughts?
Thanks

Robin:
I was surprised that they were no Greanys in O'Dorney parish since a marriage usually occurs in the home parish of the bride. I checked some of the near by parishes: Ardfert, Killahan, Kilflyn and there were a few Greaneys and Graneys in those parishes. You can go to www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/kerry to check out those records.

Thank you Roger! It does make sense that the couple would get married in her parish. Three of their 8 children were baptized in Ardfert so I am going to search in that direction first.

Hi Robin!
I found your post above interesting and wonder if we might have some distant connection. I say this because it contains the name Slattery and my ancestors from the Parish O Dorney were Slatterys.
Here is the piece with the Slattery reference.
Annie O'Leary B. 6 Nov 1868 Ardfert and Married Edward Slattery Immigrated to Lincoln, Rhode Island, USA
My particular Slattery left Ballysheen (townland in O Dorney) in about 1850 (as far as we can tell). His name was Dennis Slattery; his mother was Margaret Hanlon Slattery, and she came over with him, the father (Daniel) having left in the early 1840s to work in upstate NY. But they lost contact with him and then came over themselves and settled in Minnesota. I think there could have been siblings who stayed in the area, but haven't been able to really find that out for sure. If there were siblings, they would have been born somewhere between early 1830s and early 1840s; but your Edward might have been a son or cousin or some such thing. Hopefully I'll be able to dig into that more in the next year or two.
All the best,
Colleen Slater
(sadly, they changed the name from Slattery to Slater ...)

Hi Colleen;
I have just begun to look into Edward Slattery in hopes that I might be able to find more clues for my Leary/ O'Leary line.
Edward married my Great Grandfather's sister Annie. According to their marriage certificate here in Cumberland, Rhode Island he was the son of John Slattery and Bridget Sullivan. His birth has been cited from 1868-1872. All sources have him being born in Kerry Ireland. He immigrated in 1890/1891 and Married Annie o'Leary in 1893 here in Cumberland, Rhode Island. Annie also immigrated in 1890/1891. I assume the families knew each other and possibley immigrated together. On my to do list is searching out their immigration path. They had two sons, Leo and Vincent. Leo became a Priest and stayed in RI. Vincent married Annie ( ...) moved to Hempstead, Nassau county , New York and had at least one child, Annie.
I am sure there must be a connection... if i find more I will let you know. My e-mail address is
Good luck on your search.

Hello Robin!
The Kerry church records show that there was a John Slattery born in 1840 who must have been an older brother to my Dennis Slattery (who was born around 1835). The church records for Abbeydorney start around 1837, so there wasn't one for Dennis. However, from other records I know that the parents and townland for John are the same as those for Dennis (townland is Ballysheen, Parents are Daniel Slattery and Margaret Hanlon). I don't know what became of John, but I intend to do more research on him as time permits. I'll keep you posted!
Good luck to you, too!
