Hi, I am still trying to find a baptismal record for my 2nd great grandfather. He was in the British Army and his pension records state that he was born in 1830 in Dungannon. I think he was Roman Catholic as I have made a connection with his son's family and their records are Catholic. I know of 3 children : Rose  Anne , according to UK census, born in Belfast, abt. 1850, Isabella, born in Fort Beaufort, South Africa, abt. 1860. John, born in Dover ( family say) in abt. 1862.I have looked everwhere for John's birth record, using the different spellings of Mcgill, to no avail.I have looked at the army records and births abroad to try and find Isabella's birth but again have found nothing.

I have scoured the Roman Catholic Parish Registers but again to no avail.

I dont know the name of Michael's wife or parents. I have used Irish naming patterns to hypothesise that his father was John and his mother Isabella Mcvey. I have found a marriage for them in Cookstown, 3rd Feb, 1825.

However I cant prove any of this.I have done lots of searching to try and be specific about townlands but with no coclusion.

I would be grateful for any advice you can give me about where to look next.

Many thanks, Ann

  • Ann,

The RC parish records for Dungannon start in 1822 and are on-line on the nli site. However I note that there is gap between 3rd Dec 1829 and 23rd April 1831, so if Michael was born in that gap (as his year of birth suggests) then there will be no baptism record to find.

I looked for Rose Ann’s baptism in Belfast c 1850. There is a Rose Ann Magill bapt in Belfast St Patrick’s on 1st Oct 1850 but her father was Samuel. The oldest RC church in Belfast is St Mary’s which dates to the 1780s but unfortunately it has no baptism records before 1867, so if she was baptised there, there will again be no record to find.

Sorry I cannot offer anything more helpful.
