The family of Michael O'Sullivan and Ellen formerly Cremin/Crimmins & etc. mainly lived in the area of Adare, Croom district. The baptism of their children took place there from 1892-1908 - but their marriage has not been found in original records, neither in Catholic Parish Registers or at least those that are online. An entry in MyHeritage claims that they married in Templeglentan on 11 January 1891 but the entry does not add any more specific details, neither the parentage of either party. The death of Hanora Sullivan is noted in Capparoe in 1901 - where the O'Sullivan family were resident in 1901 - 1911 and her son, Michael O'Sullivan was the informant of her death. However, as she died before the time of the 1901 Census and was declared to be a widow, her husband and therefore Michael's father is not known and the marriage record for Michael and Ellen is therefore the principal hope in finding his name.. Can anyone assist me in finding the marriage at Templeglentan and confirming the full details?

  • RCairns,

The paid site Roots Ireland also has that same marriage date:  11 Jan 1891

Michael Sullivan & Ellen Cremin, RC parish of Templeglentan. No parents are listed, but it does give her residence as Meeneline.

There are two townlands in Templegentan, civil paish is Monagay that are called Meenyline South and Meenyline North. I did not find the surname Cremin/Crimmins in either the 1901/1911 census or in Griffith's Valuation records for either townland though.

  • Thank you, most grateful for your replies. Any idea on how to find Michael's father's name? According to the 1901 & 1911 Census he came from Kerry c 1868-1870 and his mother was Hanora. When I checked for baptisms there were several for that time period in Kerry with a mother named Hanora.

  • A clue to the name is the Irish naming pattern. The first son was USUALLY called after the paternal grandfather.

  • RCairns,

From the 1911 census, it looks like they named two of their children, Daniel and Ellen, after their mother's parents; however they did not follow the Irish naming convention exactly. Given that, the best choices for Michael's father are Michael, Patrick and John. Using the "other search options" function of the church records on irishgenealogy.ie filtering with the mother's name Hanora, there were nine candidates for Michael's father....so it will be difficult without more information to pinpoint which one is his record.

It is very curious why there is no civil marriage record that would tell his father's name..given the 1891 date.

One strategy that you could try, but it takes some time, is to look at any Sullivan or O'Sullivan names as baptism sponsors for his children, and from there try to figure out his siblings as they were typically sponsors. With those names, you could plug them into that same "other search options" function of the church records as above and see if you get a common father. I've attempted this strategy with my own research with some success.

    Good luck!

  • RCairns,

I forgot that the civil records do not show sponsors. I found the baptisms for five of their children on the paid site Roots Ireland. The following names appear as sponsors: Bridget O'Sullivan, Thomas O'Sullivan, Helen Sullivan, Hanora Sullivan, Margaret Cremin, Maurice Cremin, and Daniel Cremin.

These people are possible siblings to Michael and Ellen. I'll let you take it from here!

    Cheers,
