Hello,

I have been searching for a birth record for my great x3 grandfather, Daniel Sullivan for a few years with no results. He married Johanna Morris in approximately 1842 in the Sneem, County Kerry area.  I have checked NLI and even contacted the church in Sneem and no record of that marriage can be found.  It most likely is missing from the records. I know that my great x2 grandfather and his sister were born in County Kerry.  Richard in 1844, in the townland of Derrgarane and Catherine in 1846, in the townland of Maulnagower.  After that no more children could be found.  I did however find a marriage for Johanna Morris to Patrick Doyle and given that I was told that Daniel died during the famine it made sense. In addition, Richard is listed as a witness to marriages and baptisms of what would be his half siblings.

Thats just a brief history.  My real challenge is trying to reach back from Daniel and finding his parents and even a marriage, just in case the assumption of sneem is incorrect (Based on where I believe Johanna lived).

Is it possible that Daniel may have been born in Cork and not Kerry?  Years ago I was told that the O'Sullivans of Kerry did not mingle with the O'Sullivans of Cork.....is that even true?  It appears that Daniel was a farmer that moved where the work was, how far did these fellows actually move with their families?

I'd love to hear anyone thoughts on this, it's a brick wall I am told may never be solved.

Thanks again,

Sheryl Sullivan Wildoner

--Unfortunately, Sullivan and names like Daniel Sullivan were very common in Cork and Kerry.

Perhaps look for the younger Daniel's baptism on the free site irishgenealogy.ie?

Also look for Johanna and Daniel's marriage on that site.

If Richard was the first son, it is very likely that Daniel Jr.'s father was also called Richard.

--It's possible Daniel was born in Cork, and yet it is unlikely. People did not move around the way we do...transportation was by foot or animal and cart.

--I believe that statement about Cork and Kerry Sullivans not speaking was a bunch of malarkey. It's a bit like saying, all the Smiths in NY did not speak to the Smiths in NJ.

--If you have not researched all the records in the U.S. (or wherever you live), be sure to do so. You may find info that leads you back to Ireland.

  • I believe I may have found your Daniel's baptism in Kerry on irishgenealogy.ie.

His mother is called Julia; Julia and Johanna were interchangeable. I have seen this variation in many records.

The townland where this Daniel was born is Coomnahorna, which is just a few miles from the town of Sneem.

    Area - KERRY (RC) , Parish/Church/Congregation - CAHERDANIEL

  • Thanks Patricia, however this Daniel was born in 1842, that is approximately when "my" Daniel was married to Johanna Morris.  The information however is interesting based on the names.  Maybe some link there.

    Any other thoughts?

  • Sorry, I misinterpreted your first message!

But I think this 1842 Daniel might have been a first child of your Daniel and Johanna.

  • Hi Patricia,

Just getting back to my genealogy and I tried to locate the townland "Coomnahorna" above at townlands.ie with no luck.  Is the spelling from Irishgenealogy.ie correct?

    Thanks again,

    Sheryl
