Hi- I found my gr gr grandmothers baptismal record in St Peter's, Athlone, Roscommon. Parents John Mitchell and Bridget Gunning. Baptized November 1826. Sponsors were John McDonnell and Maria Gately.     I believe she emigrated in late 1840s or very early 1850s to Pennsylvania, United States. I have her Pennsylvania records. Also found her siblings birth records at St Peter's. I found her parents marriage record as well, same church December 1817. Sponsors look like Gately and Keogh, and says Drum after their names. Looking for any further information on these people, or ideas where to look. I am stuck again!        Thank you!    Ruth

  • The reference to Drum likely refers to where the Gunning's lived, since (from the way you described it) it follows the most common pattern, with the townland name given after the names of the sponsors.

Drum is one of several variant names for the parish of St. Peter's Athlone, because it is the name of a civil parish (an administrative district) located within the Catholic parish (which also includes other areas), and you can find more info about that civil parish here:  https://www.townlands.ie/roscommon/drum/

That site lists the townlands within the civil parish, and you'll notice that there is also a townland there called Drum, to which the reference in the parish register might well have been referring.

  • Thank you. The oldest brother has a reference to Thomastown, so this makes sense to me now. Thanks for the link!
