Richard Castleton of Parish of Kilcleagh, Co Westmeath married Anne Mitchell of Parish of Kilcommock, Co Longford in 1867. Looking for information on both families. My great great grandmother was Catherine Higgins nee Mitchell, a sister of Anne Mitchell and wife of Archibald Higgins.

  • Anthony Richardson Castleton was the son of George. He and Anne Mitchell had the following children: Margaret Sarah (1867-1875); Eliza (1870- 1892); George (1872 - 1935); Samuel John (b. 1876); James (b. 1877/8); Aldred & Edward (b. 1880); a daughter (b. 1882); Anne Evangeline (b.1885/6)

George emigrated to New Zealand and died there on 12/05/1935.

Susan Frances Castleton was a sister of Richard and she married a relation of mine, Nathaniel Lowe, in 1861. They also went to New Zealand with their seven children, one of whom was Edward Richardson Lowe, born in Westmeath in 1875. His daughter was born in Tonga!

By coincidence, my name is Mitchell but I am not related to Anne.

  • John,

Thank you for the information and family links to New Zealand. Are there still Castletons in New Zealand?

Where did Nathaniel Lowe come from in Westmeath? not Glasson by any chance?

  • There are still Castletons, e,g, Dana, in New Zealand.

Nat Lowe came from around Moate but there are related Lowes all the way along the Dublin-Galway road from Rochfordbridge to Athlone, including Glasson.

  • John,
Presently working on on Newtown Low family tree which centres on two brothers - Mjr William (d.1678) & Lt George (d.1681) who got large land grants in Moycashel Barony, Westmeath as a reward for their Cromwellian army service. Family, well as land owners at any rate, died out when they ran out of male heirs and property passed circa 1800 to Vignoles who had married a daughter of Rev. Lancelot Low. However, the 3rd holder of these lands, one Ebenezer Low (d.1755) had many sons but none inherited as Ebenezer was restricted to a life interest only by his father Barachiah (d.1735) who was the younger son of Mjr William, seemingly for marrying the 'wrong women'.
So curious if it's known if any of  these "related Lowes all the way along the Dublin-Galway road from Rochfordbridge to Athlone" are descended from Ebenezer?
Sons of Ebenezer we know of, all born circa 1740 ish, include:
    George,
    Ebenezer,
    Samuel,
    Henry,
    Abraham
    & Richard the youngest son

So has any of Lowe's you know of, traced their family back to the Newtown Low family?

  • Hi John,My Great grandmother was Anne Mitchell and Great grandfather Richard Castleton. They had a daughter in 1885 who I find is not listed by most of the Castletons on Ancestry.ca, maybe because her name was Margaret Dowling Castleton named after their first daughter, Margaret Sarah, who died at the age of 7.

She married my Grandfather, Alan Maguire, born 1881, and had two children Hugh James Maguire 1911, and my Mom, Margaret Evelyn,  born 1923. who married my dad, Charles Graham Cotter. They emigrated to Canada in 1925 and ran a successful business in Windsor Ontario. Evelyn Castleton, born 1888 and married to William J. Burns also lived in the Windsor, Ontario area and was part of my mothers upbringing.

My Dad is still alive at 92 and has lost of pics and stories of this family and I have some writing my Mom did about the family. I am happy to share any info I have on this and have been delighted to find news about relations in New Zealand! Do write me if you'd like to catecotter1@gmail.com
You can also find me, and my family, on Facebook.

  • Hi All,

I know this thread is a bit old, but hopefully that is a good thing, perhaps some more info has come to light.

I am looking to establish if there is in fact a connection between John Lowe of Ballycahillroe (b.1799, Griffiths 1854) and Major William Lowe, allegedly via Ebenezer (who was disinherited).

Please reply (even privately if you prefer) if you have any info that may be helpful.

    Thanks

    Michael
