I am looking for a brother of my great-great grandmother Margaret Molloy.  Margaret Molloy was baptised in Rahan in Nov of 1814.  Her father is listed as Daniel Molloy and her mother Annie Mooney. Margaret Molloy married Abraham Neville in June of 1840. Abraham and Margaret Neville lived in Lynally Glebe.  They had five children in Ireland before the family left for America.  Margaret's brother, the priest, accompanied Abraham and Margaret to the boat when they left Ireland.  I would like find the name of this brother, or any other Molloy relatives.  Are there any records of any Molloys who became priests from the Rahan parish?

Margaret Molloy Neville died in 1905 in York Nebraska

Abraham Neville died in 1873 in Quebec Canada

They had five more children, one born in Albany and the other four in Canada.

  • Hi there,

You might already be aware of these records, but I will let you know of the details anyway just in case.

There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Rahan and Lynally (Meath). These date from 1810 for both baptismal and marriage records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4174. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You can check the following for possible information about Margaret's brother, the priest.

Maynooth students and ordinations index, 1795-1895 (Patrick J. Hamell Birr, Co. Offaly) 1992.

Carlow College, Carlow (J McEvoy, Carlow) 1993.

The Irish Catholic Directory was published annually from 1836 and lists priests by diocese and parish.

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at. Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38). Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS).

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

    Genealogist (Ireland XO)

William,  I was taking a class on Irish genealogy last fall.  The instructor was talking about using Irish newspapers for clues. He had several slide of articles that he had found and he was going through them when this one appeared.  At the break I asked If I could get a copy of it.  I don't know how big Rahan parish would have been in 1778, I don't have very much on the history of this branch of the family.

    Freeman’s Journal 16 July 1778

    Page 3, column 1 No. 5877

Whereas on an Inquest held before Archibald Armstrong, esq; one of the Coroners of the King’s Co. on the 19th Day of June last, the Jury found that Mathew Moll[o]y (sic) of Rahan, was willfully murdered by the several Persons undernamed who have absconded, to wit.

Martin Minogue, of Ballyna, a swarthy black haired pockmarked short Fellow, about 25 years of age.

Mathew Minogue, a squart Fellow, about 20 years of Age.

Thomas Minogue, a squat Fellow, about 22 years of Age.

Terence Minogue, a squat black haired Man, 20 years of Age

John Anderson the younger, of the Island of Clonkeen, Apprentice to a Carpenter, fair Complexion, 19 years of Age.

John Bermingham of the same, fair complexion, about 23 years of Age, about 5 Feet 4 Inches high.

Lawrence Malone, of the same, a short Fellow, black haired, pockmarked, 21 years old.

Patrick Logan of the same, a squat Fellow, 29 years of Age, brown Complexion, his Hair trimmed round.

Daniel Mollov (sic) of the same, a Carpenter by Trade, about 30 years of Age, 5 Feet 9 inches high, dark Complexion

A Reward of  FIVE GUINEAS will be paid for apprehending each of said Persons, and lodging him or them in any Goal in this Kingdom by Ferdinand Molloy (sic), of Rahan, Brother of the deceased: or by Mary Molloy, at Mr. Reynold’s in Ash-street, Dublin. July 2d 1778.

I have several pages of information that I got at the County Offaly History Center in Tullamore in 1990. They are Neville and Molly baptism records, and one page of Catholic marriage records. Are they letting you use the parish records for this project?

  • Thank you for the information.  I found a lot of history on the Rahan parish link that you sent. I am still looking for a brother of Margaret Molloy who was a priest. Our family oral tradition is that he saw the family off when they got on the boat to leave Ireland.

I have been to the parish, but I have not done any research at the National Library in Dublin.  I live in Kansas City Missouri USA.

    Thank you so much, Barbara

  • I have very little to go on.  The only document is the Naturalization papers for Joseph Neville (1841-1915).  I know the family sailed from Liverpool about 1854. When asked what was the name of the boat...Joseph said "too young - don't remember"!

William Neville was born 12 May 1853 in Ireland and Sarah Jane Neville was born in New York 12 Feb 1855.  James Edward Neville was born in Quebec Canada 22 Jan 1857, the twins Hugh and Margaret were born in Canada in 1959.

They left one son behind - John, who is my great-grandfather. John came over about 18 years later.

I have the Burlington & Missouri river Rail Road - applications for land for the family in York County Nebraska

Mar 20 1874, Joseph Neville - native of Tullamore, King Co. Ireland - last residence- Fort Howard Wisconson, lenght of time in America 21 years 160 Acres @ $7/per acre

Mar 20 1874- Margaret Neville - native of Tullamore, Kings county Ireland- last residence- Fort Howard WI, length of time in America 24 years - 80 acres @$7 per acre

Mar 20 1874 - John Neville- native of Tullamore, Kings Co, Ireland last residence Fort Howard WI, length of time in America 10 years 159 acres @ $5 per acre

April 17 1874 - William & Joseph Neville, native of Tullamore, Kings Co. -last residence Fort Howard WI- Length of time in America 20 years - in Nebraska 30 days, 320 acres @ $7 per acre.

I just called my father to check on land prices in York NE....he said the latest that he knows of the land is going for about $8,000/acre.

So they vary on length of time in America! The birth of the children gives a window of time.

  • Oh, I am ready to go!

I am in Nebraska right now.  My father is turning 88 on Halloween!  One of my greatest moments was taking my parents to Ireland.  We stayed at the Rahan Lodge and met the cousins!  My dad looks so much like the Neville's.  We were at Rahan church and a lady asked dad if he was there for the Neville wedding.  I collect photos of the family.  I have a photo of Margaret Molloy Neville and all of her children.  John was killed in a train accident in 1903.  He left Margaret with 9 children age 3 to 20.

  • Dear Mr ? Duinn,

Thank you for your email of October 7th last enquiring about Father Molloy.  I’m sorry to report that we do not have any family records for this period.

A student by the name of Peter Molloy, date of birth September 1830, from the parish of Rahan entered St. Patrick’s College on September 1st1849.  This student was ordained in 1855 and first served in Mullingar parish.  Fr. Molly’s last ministry was as Parish Priest in Ballymore where he commenced duties in 1879.  He died on April 27th 1883.

I hope the foregoing is of some use to you in your research.

We are happy to assist with enquiries of this nature, however they can be quite time consuming.  If you would consider making a small donation of €10 towards the administration costs of the College Archives it would be most appreciated.

    Yours sincerely,

  • Thank you,  I have some of the Molloy figured out.  I did notice I had a typo - Maragret Molloy married Abe Neville in 1840.  They went to Liverpool in 1850 and left for New York. I have had better luck with the Neville side of the family.  I discovered that William Nevill who moved to Lynally Glebe and was listed in the 1802 Church of Ireland census - his grandfather William Nevill had a deed # 77504 in Mountmellick dated June of 1742.  This William Nevill was a Quaker and those records are now on Find My Past.     I also have a genealogy that several families that are related did.  It has names and generations but not dates.  This was done about 1995.  I just keep working on the families.     Barbara
