I am searching for additional information on the family of my ancestors John Moloney and Mary Cooney, who were married in Youghal Arra parish on 2 March 1824. Sponsors were listed as John Genane and Matt Hogan.

John and Mary Cooney Maloney (as their name was later spelled) had five known/surviving children, all of whom emigrated to America and settled in or near Cincinnati, Ohio:

1) John Moloney, baptized 15 June 1829 in Youghal Arra parish. Sponsors at the baptism were Patrick and Mary Cooney. John was my great-great-grandfather. He emigrated to America sometime before 1857, when he settled in the Cincinnati area and married Ann Broderick (immigrant from Co Galway). They had several children, including my great-grandmother Martha Maloney. After arrival in America, his surname and that of his descendants was usually spelled Maloney.

2) Daniel Maloney, born around 1830, no baptism record found.

3) Patrick Moloney, born and baptized January 1831 in Youghal Arra parish. Sponsors at the baptism were Patk Moloney and Mary Hogan.

4) Dennis Molony (spelling per baptism record), baptized 31 July 1839 in Youghal Arra parish. Sponsors at the baptism were John Hogan, Sarah Langley. Dennis was Killed in US Civil war, 1863.

5) Mary Molony born around 1840, no baptism record found. Mary married Joseph Fanning of Thurles, Tipperary in 1856 in Cincinnati.

I would appreciate any insights, leads, or suggestions for tracking the parents of John Moloney (the elder), Mary Cooney, or their children Daniel and Mary. Thank you.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and found the parents marriage record in 1824 as you indicated. Marriage records for the parish start in 1820 but baptismal records start in October 1828 so it is likely there were children  between 1824 and October 1828 Here is the link to the parish register.       https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0759   I was not able to find the baptismal records for Daniel and Mary but you may want to scan the register for their records. I did find three other children Michael, James (twin of Denis) and William. See transcriptions below.

Because of when records are available, we won't find the baptismal records for John Moloney and Mary Cooney.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hi Emmett,

have you looked at the headstone transcriptions for the parish of Youghalarra?

    They are available on https://tipperarystudies.ie/digitisation-project/gravestone-inscriptions/

The last of the Moloney families living in Ballycarrido passed away in the recent years however there are descendents still living the general area. How they are connected to your family I dont know. There are still Cooneys in the area also again how they are connected I am unsure.

Youghalarra is the traditional burial ground of both the Cooney and Moloney families

    Kind regards

    Margaret

  • Dear Roger and Margaret,

Many thanks for your help with this search. I apologize -- I just realized I had not responded to Roger before.

And I was unaware of the the gravestone inscription records, so I am excited to look through these. Thank you Margaret. All the best,

    Emmett

  • Oh my Emmett!  So glad to see this, Clearly late the the party, but my Hogan line were in Cincinnati as well.

John Hogan and Mary Cooney are parents to my gggrandfather James who was born 1840 in Ireland, but never able to find a baptismal record.  They were very likely from Portroe/Nenagh area since my DNA matches pop up there in Ireland and in Australia from descendents of a Cooney family from Nenagh area (Michael Cooney b 1806 and Ann Guinane).  Multiple lines of this family and its cousins seem to have exited to go to US and Australia in the 1854-1856 time frame.  Lots of Cooney matches, very few Hogans.  Extensive primary research has come up empty likely due to paucity of records in the timeframe searched.  Or maybe my geography is off?

    All suggestions welcomed.
