I am seeking information about my father’s mother’s father, (paternal great grandfather). His name was Patrick P. Monaghan.  He was born in 1839 in Ireland, perhaps County Mayo.  His parents were Catherine Sullivan (born about 1814) and Michael  Monaghan (born about 1808).  Michael Monaghan and Catherine Sullivan were married about 1838 in County Mayo, Ireland.  There was another son, John B Monaghan, born in County Mayo, Ireland in 1846. Emigration to the USA of the family occurred between 1946 and 1954. They settled in the state of Iowa, USA. Three more children were born to Michael and Catherine in the USA too (Charles (b 1854), Ellen (b 1858) and Michael (b 1861), all in Keukuk County, Iowa.  I have found all this information via relatives and Ancestry website.  I am presuming all are Catholic.  My paternal great grandfather Patrick P. Monaghan married Bridget “Bid” McCann born July 4, 1850 in Massena, NY on February 8, 1871. Patrick and Bridget had 9 children while living in Keokuk County, Iowa.  The nine children, in age order included Catherine Anna (b 1872), Michael James (b 1874), Charles A (b 1875), Mary Rita (b 1877), John Francis “Jack” (b 1880), Anna Agatha (b 1882), Joseph Henry (b 1885), Ellen Teresa (b 1888), and Rose Madeline (b 1895).  Thank you.  Julie Hogan Johnson

  • Julie:

I searched on two different subscription sites and did not find any baptismal records for children of Michael Monaghan and Catherine Sullivan. (I searched for all of Ireland).

There are a number of RC parishes in Co. Mayo that do not have records back to 1846 and earlier. Likely your Monaghan family was from one of those parishes.
