Hi, my name is Rita Wilson from Queensland, Australia and I am trying to find out anything about my Paternal Great Grandmother Dorathea (Monaghan) Dunstan's family from County Sligo, Ireland. The reason why I am searching in County Sligo is because Dorathea stated on her Marriage Certificate dated 11th October 1887, in Cooktown, Queensland, Australia that she was born in County Sligo, and the names of her parents were Farrel Monaghan M.D. and Ellen Murphy when she married my Great Grandfather George Richard Dunstan, apart from that I know nothing about her or her family. If there is anyone in Ireland that may know or has a Dorathea Monaghan in their family from that area, I would love to hear from you.

I have been searching for so long and I am begining to feel that I will never know the real truth about my Great Grandmother. Rita Wilson

  • Rita,

It appears that Dorothea's father was a Medical Doctor?

    What year was Dorothea born.

I did not find any record for a Dorothea Monaghan/Monahan in County Sligo.

There is a record of a Francis Monaghan in the parish of Kilmactranny, Co. Sligo in 1841 and 1858. It is in the area of Boyle.

There is a record of a Medical Doctor in the Dublin. He is recorded as "F.L. Monahan" which could be mistaken for "Farrell".

  • I think that refernce to the physican at North Dublin Union in 1851 may be mis-transcribed I think it should read T.L. Monahan - Thomas Lewis Monahan, at the time, 1851, he lived at 51 Marlborough Street, Dublin city. In Thom's 1853 he is listed as T.L. Monahan MD, N. Dublin Union. In earlier listings, e.g Slater's 1846 he is noted as a Surgeon with an address at 19 Bolton Street.
