I am looking for any members of the Moore family who lived in Eskermullacaun.  Jeremiah (Darby) and Bridget Coughlin were married there in 1850.

Thanks

  • Hi Joanne

The marriage record is on www.rootsireland.ie/ and has the parish as Glenmaddy / Boyanagh R C parish

There are 11 other Moore marriages 1842 - 1861 from that parish also

There are also records for Glenmaddy Civil Parish: 27 baptisms, 14 marriages & 21 burials 1864 - 1901

The addresses of the Moore brides & grooms in the 1842-61 marriage records were Clooncon Classama Leitera Ardeevin (1 each) and the rest were from Cashel

I can do the same check on the Glenmaddy Civil records also if you like; I tried the Irish Censuses but no luck but Griffiths Valuation might be worth a try

  • Dear Col:

Thanks for your reply.  I have been searching for the home of Patrick Moore who immigrated to the US in 1880 but no one knew where in Ireland.  Our family said that his father's name was Jeremiah and recently I learned that a nickname for Jeremiah is Darby.  I knew his mother's maiden name was Coughlin.  That led me to Darby and Bridget who were married in 1850.  I found baptismal records for a son, John, baptized in 1851, and son, Patrick, baptized in 1854.  The information our family had on Patrick indicates that he was born in 1858.  I have also located a son by the name of Edward who was born in 1858, and Thomas who was born in 1862.  I am now wondering if I have the wrong Patrick since the birth years do not match.  I have no more information on John.  I would like to plan a visit to Ireland next spring and connect with any relatives who might be in the general area of Glenamaddy (Esker/Boyounagh?).

    Thanks again.

  • Hi Joanne

There were a lot of inaccuracies with birth years as people often didn't know them so made a guess; there was also lack of numeracy / literacy which affected the accuracy.

Griffiths Valuation has some Patrick & John Moores + an Edward in Boyonough 1856; townlands are Boyonough Beg, Cloncoon East & Classaghroe.

I couldn't find any baptisms on rootsireland.ie/ for children with father Darby or Jeremiah & mother Coughlin I'm afraid; you did well to find them!

The National Library now has the R C records freely available & there are baptisms for Glenamaddy/Boyonough from 1838 to 1881 but maybe you used these?

The irish phone book is available at 118.ie/ If you select the People Search option and enter Moore Galway you'll get 16 addresses; if you do a mail-out before coming over you might get a response from one or more who may be connected to your line.(It has worked for others).

  • Dear Col:

Thanks for the above information.  I will continue the search on the Moores.

I am also researching other Irish ancestors.  Michael Lee was born in Ireland in 1837, and his wife Maggie Hynes who was born in Ireland in 1845.  My DNA indicates that they were from Connemara, but I don't have any more information such as name of parish.  Is there a way to narrow down my search on them?

    Thanks,

    JoAnn

  • Hi Joanne,

From what I can gather, Connemara records can be found in either Clifden or Oughterard parish.

This is the only one for Michael from there from ww.rootsireland.ie/:

    Name:Michael LeeDate of Birth:
    Date of Baptism:04-Dec-1842Address:Not RecordedParish/District:KILCUMMIN OUGHTERARDGender:MaleCountyCo. Galway
    Denomination:Roman Catholic
    Father:Roger LeeMother:Mary LeeOccupation:
    Sponsor 1 /
    Informant 1:James Caufield Sponsor 2 /
    Informant 2:Bridget Kean

No luck with Maggie or the wedding record

The Tithe Applotments - free at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/ have 26 Lees in Galway in the 1820's - 12 from Kilcummin

There are 186 Hynes with 6 from Kilcummin. Disappointingly there wasn't a Kilcummin townland with both a Hynes & a Lee!

There are also 12 Lees in Galway in the 1821 irish Census but same problem as with Tithes!

There are 186 Hynes but most are from Athenry & Kiltolla

Only other suggestion is to look at the names of their children and hope that they followed the irish naming pattern. If you list their children's names in birth order I can look for M & M's parents again.
