Hello, First time user and hopefully you can direct me in the right way.  JAMES Moran  (b. c1808 Wicklow or county Wicklow) m. MARGARET HOLDEN (bap.Aug 1813 St Patrick’s, Kilkenny) and had at least 5 children - MARY c1838 county Wicklow, PHILLIP bap. 1841 Glendalough, CATHERINE bap. 1842 Glendalough, MARGARET bap.1845 Glendalough, and ANN bap. 1850 Glendalough.  Residence at baptism times was Seven Churches, Glendalough. A PHILLIP Moran was a sponsor to some of the baptism - possibly James’ brother.  James’ parents were FRANCIS MORAN AND MARY SMITH -source - shipping records) James was a miner. Roman Catholic religion.

Arrived in Brisbane, Australia 1853.   James had a sister who arrived in Sydney in 1839 - CATHERINE Moran, native of Seven Churches by shipping records, (b. c1817)  m. to JOHN FARRELL.

Parents of John Farrell are PATRICK FARRELL/FERRALL and ANN MULVANY (m. 1811) who were farmers in  Glendalough. I would like to research further and would like to check further with Glendalough. I have my suspicions that they may have previously been in Dublin area as my husband’s DNA keeps showing this area.  I also thought that they may have been some of the dissenting Catholics who moved down into the Glendalough region in the early 1800s. I appreciate any clue you can give me.

  • Hello Miriam,  Thankyou for your reply and help.  You have now made me return to my files and assess everything again to check all is correct which is a good thing.  I have picked up this research again after a couple of years hoping that there maybe more indexes released.

MARGARET HOLDEN/ OLDEN marriage in Ireland (1872 Death certificate of Margaret who was 63yrs old, making birth at 1809) to  JAMES MORAN (death cert. says Wicklow). Going by both death certificates, marriage was 1828.

Immigration records to Aus. 1853 - MARGARET 34yrs and JAMES 40YRS.  Children - MARY, 17yrs, CATHERINE, 10yrs, ANN 3yrs. If Mary was 17 in 1853, Margaret was 17yrs old when she had Mary, so that would make Margaret's birth 1819 and if Mary was born in 1836 and Margaret was 17yrs, this makes Margaret's birth again, 1819.

MARGARET'S place of Birth - Death cert. 60 Waterford, Ireland .  Parents - JAMES and MARGARET OLDEN.   James was a farmer.

MARGARET'S place of Birth - Immigration 1853 - Kilkenny, Ireland. Parents - JAMES HOLDEN and B HOLDEN, deceased.

PATRICK FARRELL (I said Carroll in the heading of my messages which is completely wrong) marriage to Ann Mulvany - I question this as well and am not sure that is correct. I should not have listed their names as there is no reason to believe these are the right parents.  Shipping records in Jan 1839 say - JOHN FARRELLL, native of Seven Churches, County Wicklow, Ireland, son of Patrick Farrell, of the same place, farmer.  John Farrell, calling - quarry man and well sinker. Age on Embarkation - 24 years in June 1839. Person certifying Registry of Baptism - certified to be 20 years by Edward K....ing, Surgeon.  Religion, Catholic.  Cannot Read or write.

CATHERINE MORAN -  Shipping Records - Catherine Farrell, Native of Seven Churches, County Wicklow, Ireland, dau. of Francis Moran of the same place, Minor.  Calling - Farm Servant.  Age on Embarkation - 22yrs.  Person certifying Registry of Baptism - Certified to be 21yrs by Edward K.....ling, Surgeon.  Religion - Catholic.  Cannot read or write.  children under fifteen years MARY, 4 years in Dec, 1838, Certified to be 4yrs by Surgeon.  CATHERINE, 2yrs, Certified to be 2 by the Surgeon.  ANN, 2 months, born on the ship.

Catherine says she is native of Glendalough, if she means she was born there, that means Francis Moran (father) and Mary Smith were there from early 1800's???

I hope I have covered all what I have been working from and maybe I should go back and search Kilkenny again.  I do appreciate your help, I am yet to go back and check our Galway and Ulster roots.

Thanks Miriam, look forward to hearing from you.

  • Hello again Miriam,

You are brilliant - looking at the family that may have remained in Ireland (that is after 1853). I have followed your lines on Mary Moran b. 1874 who went to Dublin as a domestic servant and married Patrick Barry.  The familiarity of the names just goes on and this family's link with Glendalough and the Rathdrum district.  Barrys lived in Bray, Dublin South and had numerous children and I have found Mary's brothers Franciscus ( the one you linked me with), his marriage  and his father was Franciscus living at Seven Churches, b. c1836.  This quite well be James Moran's brother and son of Francis Moran and Mary Smith.  The link is getting stronger thanks to you and once again it proves to go to other siblings and work from there.

    I appreciate this very much.

    Kayleen

ps.  Ancestry had a photo of Mary and Patrick and their family, so I maybe able to contact with them.
