Thanks for the information you provided, the death certifciate records could be promising but I am not sure who Eliza Jane Eccles is, the marriage details of John and Jane I don't think this is our family, we have no record of a Jane Simpson.
I have dug a little further and found an old family bible, listed are the names of Alexander and Samuels parents they are:
John MORTLAND and Maryann MORTLAND, any chance you can locate the marriage details? Sorry that is all the information I have.
My Great Grand father was -Alexander (single, Farmer) immigrated to Canterbury NZ in 1875 (listed as coming from Donegal), had eight children, married to Sarah BOYD, married in NZ.
Louise's Great-Grand Father was Samuel (born in Leckin) and his family immigrated to Canterbury NZ in 1877, two children were born in Letter Kenny.
I am not sure whether John and Maryann had any other children.

Hi Fiona,
Attached a record of an Alexander Mortland who was baptised in Donegal in 1850. Father: John - Mother: Maria Anna in transcription.
In original handwriting it could be "Hinde"?
A check of www.findmypast.ie - for a marriage of John Mortland to a Maria was negative. Similar in www.rootsireland.ie
Land Valuation for 1837 John Mortland.
www.findmypast.ie has a number of families named "Mortland" in the area of Raphoe, Co. Donegal.

Further to previous post, attached record of the marriage of a Samuel Mortland to Johanna Kelly in Killygordon on December 29th 1851.
No parents names listed.
A son - John - is recorded in November 29th 1852.
