Looking for info on my great grandafther, Mark (Marcus) Curran b. 1860 and his parents Lawrence (Larry) Curran & Mary Mellett, both born in 1831.
I have found transcriptions of records regarding the births of Mark's siblings & I would love to find a record of his birth and more details on his parents (parents, birthplace, etc).
The family lived in Ardmore, just east of Carna & most likely attended church in Kilkieran.
Mark immigrated to the U.S. about 1880, probably with his brother John. His parents & siblings Stephen, Ann, Lawrence & Joseph remained in Ireland.
Mark's father Lawrence Curran died between 1901 & 1911. His mother Mary died after the 1911 census. It is believed they are buried in the cemetery in Kilkieran, where their son Stephen & his wife Mary Carroll are buried.
Mark's sister Ann married a Burke & lived in Rusheenamanaugh.
Thank you!

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
It may be an idea to contact the local parish priest in Moyrus for some possible assistance, as most Catholic records are still held locally. If Mark was born in Moyrus, his birth/baptismal would be in the local parish records. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Moyrus parish, follow this link:
As you can see from the above link there are copies available from the Galway Family History Society West. Here is their email if you would like to contact them, however a fee may apply. galwaywestroots@eircom.net
Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so any births, deaths or marriages in the family after this date would be recorded in these records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

You can search the indexes to these records online at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
You could also check for record of the family in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
Family Search: www.familysearch.org
Genealogy Links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/galway/index.html
Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
