I am searching for any information on John Taggart originally from County Antrim, He was born in 1852. I know he left Ireland and lived in Ayrshire.His wife was Sarah AnnTolan but ahe may not have been Irish;

  • I would start by getting John & Sarah’s marriage certificate, as that should give you their parents names and occupations. It should also tell you whether the parents were alive or dead on that date, which helps the search in Ireland. Your couple look to have married in Dalmellington in 1871 GROS ref is 586/27. You can view that on the Scotlandspeople site for a few credits. That site also has the 1871 and subsequent censuses. They should show whether Sarah was born in Scotland or Ireland.

    Did they have children named Caroline, Jessie & John? If so, there’s a likely entry under Taggert in the 1881 census for Ayr, GROS ref 578/16/26.

    Post the results here and I’ll see if I can help you  a bit further.

  • Thank you so much for your reply. I have tried Scotlands People but they dont show up there. I found  a transcript of their marriage in Find My Past but it doesnt mention parents, I know who Sarahs parents are it is John who is the mystery. I will keep trying.  I love your site.. I always suspected I had Irish in me but not as much as my DNA has revealed.

    Thanks Again

  • Anna,

    John & Sarah’s marriage is on Scotlandspeople. (I gave you the exact reference). She is indexed under Tolland. Just search for John Taggart married 1871. No other details are required. I have had no difficulty in finding it on that site. Scottish marriage certificates record parents names and occupations, and also whether they were alive or dead.  Since you don’t have that information for John, it appears worth viewing the certificate, I would have thought.
