Good afternoon to you all,

I recently found that my family originated from Carlow and I have been researching as many records as possible to find out more about them. I traced the Connor family back to Maurice Connor who married Ellen Murphy on May 1st 1824 and they lived in Ardenhue. Unfortunately I could not find their dates of birth or their parents. I Contacted Carlow Library and was given some details from local records. I have almost everything from their marriage onwards to date and I have contacted many who live in Newport, Wales.

I would be eternally grateful if anyone could shed some light on my family from Maurice back so that I can piece together my roots.

Kindest regards

Rob Evans

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a Maurice Connor baptismal record back to the early 1800s in Co. Carlow. I extended the search to all of Ireland since Carlow town is very close to the border with Co. Kildare and Co. Laois but no records showed up in those counties. Likely your Maurice was baptized in a parish that no longer has records back to the early 1800s. The baptismal records for Tinryland parish start in 1806 on Roots Ireland so likely Maurice was was born shortly before 1806.The earliest Connor I can find is a Thomas Conner baptized in 1815.

  • Roger,

Many thanks for looking into the records for me, it is much appreciated. I had the same problem that you had when i went into Roots, The National Library of Ireland and Catholic Parish records. I did some research on Carlow from mid 1700s to early 1850s and was shocked when i read about the hardships that many families went through in the famines, migration, land issues and the rebellions such as 1798. My heart reaches out to everyone. According to some information on the internet, many records were lost in Carlow as a result of the 1798 rebellion. This may explain the difficulty in finding family links.

I hope that when the lockdown is lifted I will come to Carlow for a few days to visit the areas so at least i can feel where my family came from.

Many thanks again for your help.

    Kindest regards

    Rob
