Looking for information about Thomas Kennedy and Mary Jane Mulholland.  They were married 3 Dec 1861 in the Presbyterian Church in Mascoquin.  According to their marriage certificate, Thomas lived in Cullyvenny and his father was John Kennedy.  Mary Jane lived in Killure and her father was John Mulholland.  I know that they moved to Durham County, England and are found on the 1871 census.  They had two children, Esther and John.

Would like to know more about both of their families.  I think my ancestor William Mulholland (born about 1830) was a sister of Mary Jane.

  • Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church. So Macosquin Presbyterian might be the place to look for Mary Jane’s baptism. Their baptism records cover 1823 – 1845 then there’s a gap to 1860, then 1867 onwards. Should cover Mary Jane OK and probably any siblings. The records are not on-line so far as I am aware but there is a copy in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. Researchers in the PRONI area: http://sgni.net

I searched for Esther & John’s births. Did not find them 1864 onward so suspect they were born 1861 – 1863, which is before the start of statutory birth registration in Ireland (1.1.1864). So in that situation you need to search church records. If they attended Macosquin Presbyterian then unfortunately their baptism records for those years are lost.

I note that Thomas Kennedy, his father and John Mulholland were all labourers or farm servants. They can be hard to trace because they often moved, sometimes weren’t there long enough to be recorded and also often had houses that were below the value to be listed in Griffiths Valuation.  I searched Griffiths Valuation (1859) and the subsequent revision records for Kennedy in Coolyvenny and Mulholland in Killure but did not find either.
