I am searching form my family that immigrated in 1863 to Port Leyden, NY, USA.  Melvin (Birth 1790) and Catherine Mullaney (birth 1800) and their son Patrick.(birth 1836 and died 1932).  Patrick married Mary Melvin in 1864.  All of the records say Sligo, Ireland.  In some places it could be the City Sligo.  I have not had any luck finding any Irish records.  I am assuming they came after the potatoe famine.  This was a large family that settled together and stayed in Port Leyden for several generations.  Any help you could give me would be deeply appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I was unable to find a baptismal record for Patrick on Roots Ireland and I searched from 1829-1843. Just to confirm his father's name was Melvin? I assume the marriage to Mary Melvin occurred in NY State. Mullaney/Mullany was a very common name in Sligo. There were over 100 Mullaney/Mullany households in Sligo in the 1858 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

  • Thank you for the reply.  I just got my Ancestry.com DNA results and I uploaded them to GEDMATCH.  It is still processing so I can only do a 1:1 search.  I don't know what else to do with the DNA results.  This is a really big learning curve.  Any suggestions?

When your file is fully loaded, you can do a one to many match and get your matches. I would contact your top matches and see if you can determine which line the match occurs.
