i am looking for family of the mullen/mullins of  townland abbey in abbeyknockmoy.

my grandfather john mullen was born in 1855 in old road abbey.

john mullen married  ellen ryder in abt 1905 in abbey,

ellen was a widow having been married to martin king  in 1897, martin was killed in an accident 1903.

ellen had 4 children patrick, mary, delia, and stephen with husband martin.

she married john mullen and had another 8 children :

kate b-1906, thomas b-1908  ellen p b- 1909 john b-1910

bernard -b- 1911 ( my father ) martin b- 1912 chrissie b- 1914 margaret b-1916 ( still living )

i know that patrick king, delia king and stephen king all went to the USA.

kate mullen and  ellen p mullen also emigrated to USA.

i have records for all of the above confirming this..

thomas mullen  b-1908 would be known amongst the gaelic football supporters

he was playing football up until he was abt 38/9 playing for abbey-  feagh - possibly monivea,

my earlier family all come from the same area !!

i have been told that my grandfather john b-1855 was one of 6 children ::-

his father was also named john,

john  mullen  b- abt 1810  married mary quigley abt 1840,  they had 6 children,

sarah b- 1841

thomas b- 1843

michael b- 1847

martin b- 1850

bernard b-1852

john b- 1855 ( my grandfather )

i am hoping that some one will recognise these names and possibly

be able to tell me about which families they married into.

i still have family in the area my uncle thomas b -1908

married anne fahy, they had 3 children,

mary ellen b-1947 now wilson

billy b- 1946 - lives old road

  • hi,

In Griffiths Valuation c.1860 there are 4 MULLENs listed in Abbeyknockmoy.

Mullen, John - Abbey - Abbeyknockmoy - Galway...

Mullen, John, Jr. - Culliagh South - Abbeyknockmoy - Galway...

Mullen, Martin - Abbey - Abbeyknockmoy - Galway...

Mullen, Patrick - Carrowreagh East - Abbeyknockmoy - Galway...

If your g-grandfather was John, then he would likely be John Jr. at Culliagh South.

His father was also John at Abbey, as Jr. denotes a father/son relationship.

The KINGs are listed in 1901 in Peagh - there is no such place, if you look at the Census original it reads Feagh.

I don't see your grandfather in the area in 1901 - maybe he worked overseas, saved his money, and returned to Ireland and bought a farm, as quite a few did ??

This is him with his family in 1911.
    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Galway/Abbey_West/Feag…

I have cousins in Feagh, I will ask if the Mullens are still around.

I had a grand Aunt who went to New York in 1905, and she was travelling with her MULLEN cousins.

I still haven't worked out the family connection yet.

  • hello sean, thanks for your reply to my post,

on the griffiths valuation my gt/grandfather is john mullins - abbey - abbeyknockmoy, and that is his brother martin mullins - abbey - abbeyknockmoy,

i had an idea of who they were, but i have only just verified it !!

i purchased access to abbeyknockmoy parish registers and those two are my relatives,

i have seen records that confirm it , john mullins wife is mary quigley, and martin mullins wife is mary rabbit,  i now have records of there children and my grandfather john mullen.

john mullen was absent from the 1901 census as i tracked him to burnley lancashire in england,

were he was working ! he returned to abbey and married my grandmother  ellen king - 1905.

it causes a lot of confusion with the names mullen/mullin/mullins, some records are mullen, some are mullin, and others are mullins, i have to keep checking them out making sure which is which !!

thanks for sending me the records of census's, on the 1901 census i saw my grandmother with her first husband martin king before he was killed in a thunderstorm in 1903 in feagh !!

i will check to see if any mullins went to new york in 1905 with your great aunt ?

do you know a martin curley from guilka menlough ?

thanks again, i will write you if i find out anything,

    keep in touch,

    john mullin.

  • hi John,

re: do you know a martin curley from guilka menlough ?

Martin is a cousin of mine and has just moved back to Galway to run a Genealogy business.

Martins grandmother was a Reynolds, and two of my Dads brothers married Reynolds girls.

    -----
Mary ROCHE emigrated to New York in 1903 and was travelling with Bernard MULLIN 26yo, his wife Mary, and sister Ellen.

I believe the MULLINs were from Dangan Outen, but not 100% certain.

They were going to join Bernards brother Michael.

Marys siblings Martin, Patrick and Delia followed Mary to New York between 1905-1910, and I have no idea what happened to any of them. There was also a cousin Delia ROCHE from Feagh that emigrated to NY in 1915 - no idea what happened to her either ??

  • hi sean,

the reason that i asked about martin curley is that he is also a cousin of mine !!

i just thought that you may know him as you seem to have a good knowledge of the area.

martin was working here in liverpool for 6 years and we met up after discovering he was a cousin !!

my  grand aunt - mary mullins  - she married laurence reynolds in oct 1885 and her daughter was

ann reynolds my 1st cousin  x removed and ann then  she married patrick melody and ann is martins grandmother !!

my gt- aunt mary mullins is the daughter of martin mullins who is the brother of my gt/grandfather

john mullins,  it was mainly through working with martin curley on the mullin family that i found out most of this otherwise i would still be treading water - haha !! he is ok martin.

john mullen my grandfather had a brother named bernard mullin and also a brother michael mullin

and i have not been able to find out what happened to them ? i will ask martin curley if he will try

to find out !!  thanks for that sean --  do you know the surname of mary mullin -- bernard's wife ?

and where abouts is dangan outen i have never heard of the place ?

was michael mullin living in new york when mary roche and bernard and wife and sister went to usa ?

    thanks sean,

    john mullin.

  • hi John,

I believe this is Ellen MULLEN in 1901 in Dangan Oughter, Moyne - parents Brian MULLEN and Ellen HIGGINS.
    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Moyne/Dangan_Ou…

Both Bernard b.1876 and Michael b.1878 were in NY in 1901.

Michael emigrated in JUN 1899, Bernard emigrated in APR 1900 and was a single man.

Bernard came back to Ireland and in 1903 took his wife Mary, sister Ellen, and cousin Mary ROCHE back to New York.

re: do you know the surname of mary mullin -- bernard's wife ?

No, I can't find where or when Bernard got married. Did he marry in NY and return to Ireland for his honeymoon, or did he marry in Ireland ??

I have not been able to make the connection to Martin CURLEYs MULEN family.

one of them - michael was in the garda !!

sorry i couldn't be of help,

  • hi John,

re: sorry i couldn't be of help

No probs John - I have quite a few of my family that just disappeared off the face of the earth...

Unfortunately once they left Ireland they were forgotten about...

Very few ever went back to visit Ireland...

Certainly once the parents had died there would be very little interest in visiting Ireland...

Life was probably tough enough anyway on the farm for them to worry about those that had left...

I don't think they wrote much either...

  • hello sean,

i have to agree with you about never returning to ireland,

my dad bernard he ran away  to england when he was 19, from feagh -- and they sent somebody

to take him back !! he was told he could leave through the front door when he was 21,

he stayed for about 8 years and left when his mum died !! abt 1938.

    he never went back !!

it was me who had to answer any letters from his sister mary !!!

can you not trace your family in USA ?

i have traced a lot of mine.

    cheers,

    john mullin.

  • hi John,

re: can you not trace your family in USA ?

I am afraid not - I found them all arriving at Ellis Island, then a couple of Census returns and then nothing!!

No idea I am afraid - unless someone from those families starts looking for ancestors it will remanin a mystery.
