Finding where your Patrick Mulligan came from will be difficult without knowing his parents names. The surname Mulligan was found in good numbers in many counties across Ireland in the 19th century.

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and there were 36 Patrick Mulligan baptismal records from 1822-1828 including 7 in 1825. Also, many RC parishes across Ireland do not have records back to 1825 so if Patrick was baptized in one of those parishes, no record would be available.

My recommendation is to consider DNA testing. Your closest matches may give you some clues on where in Ireland Patrick Mulligan originated.

Have you searched all the U.S. records pertaining to Patrick and Margaret? Sometimes censuses, birth, baptism, marriag, death records give place of birth. Also newspaper obituaries, wills, headstones.

I looked on findmypast's church registers and found baptismal records for five children for Patrick and Margaret. The transcription of one such baptism shows a county in Ireland as father's residence : CAVAN.

Following Patricia's lead on Co. Cavan and went back to Roots Ireland. No 1825 Patrick Mulligan in Co. Cavan. There was a May 12 1822 Patrick Mulligan baptismal record in the Cavan town RC parish with parents Patrick Mulligan and Elizabeth Kelaher. Also, an August 24 1827 Patrick Mulligan baptismal record also Cavan town RC church with parents Peter Mulligan and Eleanor Magown.

THank you for your help. Did the DNA and found a distant cousin whose relatives were born in New York City.. We found Patrick Mulligan in 1880 census in New York City with some family. He married Margaret Green and lived with her brother Michael. They had at least one  son, Edward Mulligan, born in New York City. WE can trace the family going forward but not back to Ireland.
