Have found Mulligan cousins with roots in Druminacrehir, County Longford.  John Mulligan was born ca 1839 in Druminacrehir.  His father was Peter.  Peter had 4 known children Mary 1826-1906, John, Ann and Patrick.  John married Mary Dolan.  Our Mulligan family was Patrick, 1830-1895, Nicholas ca1820, Bridget and Ann. We think all were born in this same area of Longford.  All four immigrated to USA.  Their parents are unknown but we hope you might find some connection to Peter.  FYI - Nicholas as the oldest Mulligan immigrant named his first son Bernard.  The parish may be Granard but not sure.

Druminacrehir townland is in Columbkille civil parish and its northwest of Granard. The RC parish is Colmcille and records start in 1833 according to the subscription site Roots Ireland.

I searched on Roots Ireland and there was a July 3 1841 baptismal record in Colmcille for a John Mulligan with father Peter Mulligan and mother Bridget Reilley but they lived in Molley. There is also an 1842 record in the same parish but they did not live in Druminacrehir but rather Ballinrun.

Regarding Patrick Mulligan, Roots has four records in 1825-1826 but none until four records in 1835.

You mentioned Mary Mulligan died in 1906. Do you have death records for any of the children in the two families that might show the maiden name of one of the two mothers/? I'm not sure if baptismal records are available or not but there are so many Mulligan baptismal records we need the mothers maiden name.

I checked the 1853 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Columbkille ciivl parish and there were over 30 Mulligan households, however, only one was in Druminacrehir-- a John Mulligan.

    Let me know.

  • Roger,

Yes, I have records for the cousins found through Ancestry DNA.  John's wife was Mary Dolan, Patrick who died in 1918 was married to Annie Beglan.  Peter is the one whose wife I did not have .  John was born +/- 1839 so I am sure that is the correct baptismal record.  Mary who died in 1906 was a spinster known as The Nun in her family although she was not a nun.  I assume her martial status had a lot to do with that.  Have you found anything with a Nicholas, Bernard or Patrick in the time of Peter or John?  I know parish records are mostly gone but Griffith's Valuation as well as the flax growers info might be helpful if I knew more about the area.  Ireland has so many different parishes, townlands, etc. that I get thorougly lost.  Is there a way to find any present day Mulligans in this area who might have roots back to the early 1800's?  Also another cousins found records for a Nicholas and Patrick in Coole, I think.  Of course that is Westmeath but was it ever a part of County Longford?  The dates for them was wrong but it is the first Nicholas we have found.  We know one of our Mulligan siblings, Ann, was born in Longford in 1830 as this is on her tombstone.  The cousin identified using Ancestry's DNA is shown to be 3rd or 4th cousin using one method, another indicates 5th.  And she knows her family did come from Druminacrehir.  Thanks so much for Peter's wife.  What you all do as volunteers is great and so appreciated..

I guess I was not clear about death records. In many States particularly after 1900, the death record will show the names of the parents of the deceased. Pennsylvania is one that I'm very familiar with since all my ancestors went to Philadelphia. All Pennsylvania death records from 1906-1967 are on Ancestry and many of my family death records show the parents names. So I was wondering if the death records for Patrick, Nicholas, Bridget or Ann showed any information on parents.

I would be cautious about using the 1841 John Mulligan baptismal record with father Peter. That family lived in Molly. I did a Google Map search and Molly is six miles west of Druminacrehir and with Mulligan such a common name in the area, there could have been another Peter Mulligan with children.

Roots Ireland has a January 23 1838 baptismal record for a Nicholas Mulligan father John Mulligan and mother Ann Quinn. The record was in Colmcille and they lived in Sonagh. No Bernards in that time period. There are four Patrick Mulligan baptismal records in 1835 and five in 1839 and more in the 1840s.

  • We do have one death certificate but the writing is so poor the place name is impossible to read.  Thanks for checking the available records.  We will keep hoping another DNA match eventually happens that will give us some answers.
