Searching to find 2x great grandfather Mulligan.  Ancestry DNA has identified  a 3rd cousin or 2nd cousin once removed.  Both Mulligan families seem to have roots in Druminacrehir, Longford.  She is descended from Michael 1908-1974, Patrick 1872-1918 and John abt. 1839-March 19, 1909.  She identifies John's father as possibly Peter abt 1800 - abt 1864.  He was born, we think, in Druminacrehir and died Granard.  She has his children as Nicholas 1918, Mary 1826, Ann 1830, Patrick 1830, and John 1839.  My husband is descended from Patrick.  We are trying to determine if indeed this is Patrick's father.  All of her research through John is verified, Peter is the missing link.  We think the DNA confirms this family link so hope with this info you might be able to help us.  Patrick, Nicholas and Ann all left during the famine years and lived in Illinois.  Mary never married and lived with John.  She was called "the nun" in the family due to being a spinster.  I have identified a Peter Mulligan on two different land holdings in Griffith's 1854.

Regards.

  • Hello again Susan!

Druminacrehir townland is in Columbkille civil parish and the RC parish is Colmcille

The RC baptismal records for Colmcille RC parish on the subscription site Roots Ireland start in 1833.

I searched for a John Mulligan baptismal record in that parish with a father Peter and two possibilities came up.

John Mulligan baptized July 3 1841 father Peter Mulligan and mother Bridget Reilly

John Mulligan baptized January 6 1842 father Peter Mulligan and mother Mary McCabe.

I ruled out the 1842 record since Peter Mulligan/Mary McCabe continued having children into the 1850s.

The 1841 parents Peter Mulligan/Bridget Reilly lived in Molley and had two other children post 1833-- Thomas 1836 Rose 1839.

At this point there is no way to determine if the your matches John Mulligan is the 1841 John on Roots Ireland.

I will also note that there were four John Mulligan baptismal records in Colmkille RC parish in the period 1834-1838 but none had a father Peter.

  • What were the names of the fathers for the 4 John Mulligans? Mothers? If you have those, I will check possible DNA links. Thank you.
