Hello, I am new to this message board and am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to help me research the Irish side of my family. Despite researching for many years, I have never made any headway with any of my branches from Ireland.
One of the families I would love to know more about is the Murdock family who came to live in Liverpool some time prior to 1841.
My 3x great grandmother was Sarah Murdock, who, according to the census was born between 1829 and 1833. I know she had three sisters, Mary (b. about 1821), Margaret (b. about 1825) and Ann (b. about 1826). On one of the census returns in Liverpool, two of the sisters state that they were born in Sligo.
Their parents were John and Hannah Murdock. John was a mariner according to Sarah's marriage certificate and, according to the 1841, census, Hannah was born about 1791. They both appear to have died before 1851.
Any pointers would be greatly received!

Karen:
I assume your Murdock familiy was Church of Ireland. The subscription site Roots Ireland has considerable Church of Ireland records on their data base but only five of the parishes have records back to 1833 or earlier. When I searched for Murdock baptismal records, no records came up which indicates that your family was from a parish where early records are not available. Likely they lived in a parish bordering the Atlantic Ocean.
Have you considered DNA testing? You may match someone who has more information on your Murdock line.

Hi Roger,
Thank you for your reply. Two of the sisters married in Church of England churches in Liverpool, but I have found that many of my RC ancestors tended to marry in C of E Churches. The burials I have found for the sisters in Liverpool are all in a RC cemetery, so I am inclined to believe that they were RC.
I have had my DNA tested, but, so far, this has not helped on this side of my family.
Thanks again.
