Looking for the family of Michael Murphy. His death cert lists parents as Edward & Ann (no mainden name). Michael came to the US abt 1848 and settled in Bronx, NY.

Michael married Rose Rogers abt 1858. They had 9 children: 1880 census lists Hugh, John, James; but by the 1900 census only 2 were alive. I have not been able to find any census records prior to 1880.

I found Michael and parents Edward & Ann and some siblings in the "Famine Immigrants Books", arriving May 1848. Although Michael with the correct parents names are listed, I'm not positive that this is the correct family. I haven't found any other document to prove this is them. I also don't know if Michael immigrated with his family or on his own.

Michael's occupation was listed as 'boilermaker' on several of the census'. Also listed as boilermaker (and once iron worker) in the NYC Directories.

In 1880 the census states that Michael did not own property, but by 1900 he did. The family lived at 342 Morris Ave, Bronx, NY. I was able to trace backwards in the city directories and found the first occurance of this address in the year 1897.

Any help with finding relatives is greatly appreciated!

Allison

  • I should also say that depending on what document you look at, Michael was born either 1829 (3 instances), 1834 (1 instance), 1835 (1 instance). Michael died 22 Nov 1906, age 77 (according to death cert), in Bronx, NY.
