My grandfather Roy O'Neill Murray, who always proclaimed that he was Irish, was actually born in England in 1885.

His father was Patrick O'Donaghue Murray and I believe that he was born and baptized in 1858 in St Paul's Arran Quay Parish, Dublin, Ireland.

I know that his father's name was also Patrick.  I am only guessing however that the Patrick Murray and Mary O'Neill who were married 20 Sept 1857 in St Paul's Arran Quay Parish, Dublin, Ireland were indeed his parents.   On this marriage record, this Patrick Murray's father was also Patrick Murray and Mary O'Neill's father was John O'Neill.

Again I am guessing that Patrick O'Donaghue Murray's mother's maiden name was O'Donaghue but have no proof of this, nor can I find a marriage record for a Patrick Murray and an O'Donaghue.

Roy O'Neill Murray eventually emigrated to Scotland after his parents died and served in World War I for the Royal Scots Regiment.  He married Mary Cowe Davidson in Edinburgh in 1915 and they emigrated to Canada in 1925 along with my mother and my aunt.  Roy and Mary had 4 daughters in total and their last daughter was named Patricia, since he never had a son that could bear his father's name.

I am looking for information about the Murray, O'Neill and O'Donaghue families from the Dublin area.Roy Murray

  • Hi there,

Could you please post your message on the St. Paul's parish page here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/st-pauls-dublin

Did you check for Roy O'Neill Murray's details on the UK National Archives here:http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of St. Paul's. These start from 1731 for both baptismal and marriage records. These can be accessed at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 8828-8838. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

I also found this link which might be of use to you: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,406491.0.html and this website: http://www.historyireland.com/volumes/volume15/issue1/features/?id=170

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

If you haven't done so already, you could check the 1911 and 1901 census records here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

I hope this is of some help to you.

There are a few other records you could look at:

    • 1835-37 Dublin county freeholders & leaseholders. NLI (National Library of Ireland) Ms. 9363
    • 1840-1938 Admissions and Discharge registers for Dublin city workhouses (North and South Unions). National Archives of Ireland (NAI)
    • 1843 Voters NAI 1843/52
    • 1851 Index only to heads of households, by street and parish. NAI Cen. 1851/18/1
    • 1864 City of Dublin Voters List, by district and street. NLI Ir. 94133 d 16

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

    Genealogist (Ireland XO)
