Hello, I am searching my 2x Great Grandmother, Katherine Murray.  It is possible she was born in County Longford.  An American census record gives her birth as July, 1848, but I am unable to find her in Longford at that time.  I have no parent names for her either.  Another census record indicates she emmigrated to America in 1863, and there are a few possibilities but how to prove which record might be her?   She married her husband, George Maguire around 1867 in Connecticut.  I am thinking that her birth year is incorrect, or that she was not from Longford.  If anyone has access to birth records, could you please do a search and see if you have any luck finding her?  I have been trying for years to find her.  She died in 1904 of a kidney problem in Massachusetts.

Thank you,

Stephanie White

The subscription site Roots Ireland has 12 Catherine Murray baptismal records from 1840-1846 in Co. Longford (no records in 1847-1849). Since you don't have the parents names, there is no way to confirm any of these records and maybe her record was in a parish that does not have records back to the 1840s.

I assume the 1904 death record does not have parents names?

Have you considerd DNA testing? You may have matches with 3rd -4th cousins who have more info on the family in Ireland.

  • Hi Stephanie,

My grandmother was Margaret (Brigid) Murray. I'm not sure where exactly she was born, but she married my grandfather, Daniel Skelly, and they lived in the townland of Claris, in Newtowncashel. I have not been able to trace her family, no birth, marriage or death certs for my grandmother yet.

While searching, I did find Murrays living in Claris. I have not been able to link them to my family definitively, though.

The 1911 census has Anne Murray living in house #6, Claris

The 1901 census has Brigid Murray living in house #7, but I think she was too young to be my grandmother.

I also came across a Thomas Murray in Claris.

My family (Daniel Skelly, Margaret or Brigid Murray) lived in house #4.

I have had my DNA done, but have not found any Murray relatives yet.

I've taken quite a long break from my search, but your post has got me interested again. I will let you know if I find anything that might be helpful to you.

  • Stephanie, I just looked through my file, and found the marriage info for my grandparents. Margaret (Brigid) Murray's father was Patrick, a farmer, living in Claras. The marriage was in 1908.
