Looking for any Nally's living in the county of Westmeath as my great great grandfather John Nally came from there. He was born in about 1813.

  • C Meakin:

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and found only one John Nally baptismal record in Co.Westmeath around 1813.

John Nally baptized May 7 1814 at Athlone RC church parents Francis Nally and Mary Kelly

Do you have any other info on his family? Siblings?

    Have you tested your DNA?

There were 279 Nally/McNally records in Co. Westmeath in the 1911 census.

  • No I don't have any more info on his family in Ireland, I would love to know if there are ANY of his family still living as I would love to be able to contact & talk to them about what I know of his life here in Australia, I haven't had a DNA test. Should I have one done?

  • C. Meakin:

From a DNA test, you will get matches ranked from closest to more distant.  They could be living anywhere in the world. You then contact them and hopefully they respond and you can determine which line they are from and maybe you will get some Nally connections.

  • My grandmother was a Westmeath Nally and I have a lot of living Nally cousins still living in and around Westmeath. I was blessed to have her until I was 15 and she brought me to Ireland to meet my cousins. I have a lot of documentation on her family because she and her brothers were very knowledgeable on their cousin connections.  Most of my research is the Nally/McNally family. My ggg-grandfather was Francis McNally from Longford. Because we have a few Francis's, and many Anne's and Johns in our tree, I have looked into the Francis Nally/Mary Kelly connection. I've only been able to find 1 sibling for your John Nally born 7 May 1814  to Francis Nally and Mary Kelly. There is an Anne Nally born 13 June 1816 born to the same parents, baptized at the same parish. I have been unable to locate a marriage record for Francis Nally and Mary Kelly but that was before Civil Registrations so without going through the actual parish books that may be hard to find.

A DNA test to try to connect to other Nally's would help. We've found relatives throughout the world. There are many in England, the USA and Australia. Chances are good that we have a connection somewhere, as a parish priest in Westmeath once told me "It's a small island, we're all related somewhere!"  I'm happy to share any of my research that you think may help you.
