My ancestor is W. McLaughlin.  I'm assuming his name was William.  He was born in 1830 in Ireland and emigrated to the USA in 1846 or 1847.  He had a brother named David who was born around 1826.  W. McLaughlin was a harness maker and settled in South Carolina.  He had a son born in America named J.G. McLaughlin.

I am looking for information as to what parish his family may have been from.  Thank you in advance.

  • Too many people born with the same name as the brothers and around the same time as them.

You might have to find some more information in the United States about them first to rule out some of the records that exist in Ireland . Death records, marriage records might reveal the parents names.

  • Thank you for the reply.  I'm afraid I'm stuck not finding any more info.  I believe it's possible he died during the American Civil War, as I cannot locate any information on him beyond 1860.  The last place I can track him to is Red River Military Camp in New Mexico where he was apparently training with a cavalry unit.

I am hopefully coming to Ireland in November and I pray I can find more information once I am there.

    Thank you again.

  • Greetings,

The most useful search site I have found is www.familysearch.org which is a free resource offered by The Chrch of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints.

From a cursory search on the isusing search input " Ireland, William Mc Laughlin, Birth year 1820 to 1830" delivers many results.

From your own knowledge it may be useful to leaf through these as first names were often carried forward through generations and a mother's name will have been frequently given to a first daughter. This might yield clues narrowing the search.

The name Mc Laughllin would seem to have many occurrences in Northern Ireland.

The Dioscesan office in Armagh might be able to do a search under parish records for 1830

    best wishes

    Hugh

  • Thank you, Hugh.  I use familysearch.org almost exclusively.  It is a wealth of information that I could not otherwise find.  I'm a big advocate of that resource! : )

Great info about contacting the diocese.  I had not thought of that.

You are correct in that most information I've found points in the direction of Northern Ireland.

    Thanks again,

  • I do not know his full name.  I've been told that he went by "Jim" which means his first name was probably James, but I don't know what the "G" stands for yet.  He was born in 1853 near Spartanburg, South Carolina.

    Thank you,
