My 3rd Great Grandfather was Nicholas George Johnstone born in Dublin abt 1789.  I have found him on several English cencus's but nothing in Ireland, re exact year born or parents.  He was a Major in the British army and married Mary Housman. I've foumd a Nicholas George son of Edward Johnstone and Jane Monck, Jane's parents being George Monck and Lady Araminta Beresford. I just don't have the proof they are his parents and grandparents. George did name one of his daughters Araminta, was this after his grandmother?  Can anyone help me solve this.

I searched the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie  ( Church Record Tab) and did not locate the 1789 baptismal record for Nicholas.

I did find a March 5 1843 baptismal record for an Edward Johnson Johnson in the St. Peter's Church of Ireland parish in Dublin. Father was Nicholas Johnson and mother Maria (no last name) The family was living in Portobella Barracks.

  • Hi Roger.

Thank you so much for your help.  1789 for Nicholas's birth is really only a guess from his age on the England census's I have on him. They do vary but all say birth place Dublin so sure that is right.

I've never been able to find a mother for Edward but have his father as Nicholas  Johnston (no E on the end?) of Wood Park Armagh 1724-1793.   Nicholas's parents were William 1685 - 1740 & Henrietta Sophia Acheson 1690 - ????

I haven't been able to find out if Edward had any siblings?

    Regards,
