In previous Post's, we have traced the early life of Grandfather Thomas Nolan born 1856, where his father is also Thomas Nolan (carpenter) and mother Catherine Glynn, as recorded at his Baptism.

In trying to build the story about his father Thomas (1823-1871), indications are that he is likely the son of Daniel Nolan, where we see in some Tilth Documents that there is 3 brothers/cousins listed, being Daniel, Denis and James. From the Kiltartan Cemetery rec's, Sr deLourdes thought a Martin Nolan and Anne Kenny buried in a Nolan Family plot, may be connected to these 3 fellows.

I have found that James was married to a Margaret Griffin, but have found no indication as to who are the wives of Daniel and Denis. I expect that the best way to get any indication is to find the Baptisms of Daniel, Denis and James correct and see if the girls are recorded there, correct ? If they are all centered around Rineen, Ballyaneen or such, where is the best way to find them ?

Regarding the Kiltartan Cemetery, what archives are avaiable or who can I approach to explore history of the Nolan Family plot and any older Nolan's buried there.

Thanks Fred Nolan

  • Thomas Nolan (my Grandfather) was born 4 November 1856 to Thomas Nolan (from the Nolan's of Rinneen, Ballyaneen South and Gort) and Catherine Glynn, who may be from the Glynn's near Rinneen or Shragh perhaps. Catherine disappears completly after the birth and later, young Thomas emigrates to Australia in 1876, at the age of 19. Family stories of Ireland were very few. I was wondering if I could search for any records of his early life in Ireland like his childhood, schooling, work etc which may give clues to his upbringing, family links and even what happened to Catherine. His father died in 1871 when he was 14. Other Nolan's I have found went to the USA at various times, but Thomas decides to go to Australia alone as a teenager. With Thomas and Catherine not married, how would he have been raised ? Would he have been forstered or placed within the family say ? In Australia he was successful and appeared educated, so one would say he was from a good home. What is the best way and source to look for his early childhood ? Thanks again Fred Nolan
