I am hoping to find Irish relatives of Ann Quin, only child of Francis Quin who was born in Limerick between around 1899 to around 1910. He became Surgeon Lieutenant Commander Francis Quin R.N. and married Aline Barton (a New Zealand born pilot) (full name Mabel Alexandra Barton) in Jamaica. Ann is now 78 and lives in New Zealand. She hasn't had any connection to her father's family in her life and I would really like to help her find her Irish relatives.

  • Hi Maureen

Thank you very much for your help. That is very nice of you. The Quin family I am after spell their name with just one 'n'. Do you think this is the same family?

  • Hi Becky

During those times the spelling varied widley - my ancestors were Deen in the records & Connor,  they apparently had to drop the "O" to get the soup during english domination and the famine to get soup to survive - also they spoke Irish, and the english spelling was different,  my family names are now spelt Deane & O'Connor, another spelling name change was Cournane to to Courtney, and the other reason during the english rule the english law the Catholics were not allowed to be taught to read and write, not allowed to own a horse valued at more than five pound ........ and so on

Did I mention that when I went into the 1911 census there was no Francis Quin at all but have a look they may have moved do a google search for 1901 or 1911 Ireland census

    Good Luck

  • Thank you Maureen. Gosh, your family history is interesting. The soup and the being forbidden to learn to read and write. I take your point about the spellings. It is all a bit vague at that end but one of the only real facts I know about the father is that he was in the Royal Navy. I searched the records I could find for that and come up with a Francis Joseph Quin born in Cavan in 1897.

  • Hi Again Becky

I found this on line - may or may not be him - see attached file

One of the things I did was check the archives in the area where they lived - sometimes there is information in that as to parents names  etc

    Good Luck

  • Hi Maureen, that is Amazing !!! definitely him. that is so clever of you !!!

He married Ann's mother in Jamaica which ties in with the time he was in the West Indies and her birth in 1935.

Strange about the double n in his surname and the way the daughter has just one. Must ask about that !

I'm trying to keep this a secret til if and when there are some living relatives she can contact.

So now I guess I start to track and trace his nephews and neices.

Thank you so much for your help.

  • Hi Becky

    Glad I found it,

Have you got copies of his file? I wonder if there is information in the records that may help you e.g Parents siblings , next of kin before he married they would have had to have something on file as a descendant you may be able to get access to this information

Good Luck, let me know how you get on
