My Great Grandmother, Anna O'Carroll (est. 1888) Came to The US in approximately 1910. She was from (and this is uncertain) County Cavan, or Limerick. She was "white lace irish".  She would later marry a John Gillespie in NYC. She was one of several siblings. One brother, or cousin (maybe uncle) was reputed to be a Sean O'Carrol who was a Brigadier General of some sort (or significant military figure). Some say he was arrested (it also could have been a Richard Ocarrol?). Much has been lost in transilation over the years. Im going to lean towards uncle, or someone a bit older than her because he gave her a Gaelic Cross when she was young

How the story goes, when my grandparents went back in the 1980's the cousins that still live on her families property / estate were "Edwards" (or edmond, edmonds?). They were, well off- large house, large property- details are sparce here. The family had still had a significant presence in the area.

Some other things that have been said over the years- there was some family relation to the basis of the movie The Quietman- which i can not figure out because by all accounts i can find that movie is based in fiction. There is also a book that i cant remember the title to

Would any of this make sense to anyone? Kind od drawing a blank, grasping at straws

The two areas that come up with all family members is Limerick and County Cavan.

  • Hi,

    Griffith's Land Valuations 1850's have a Michael Carroll in the townland of Ballygubba South, Civil Parish of Tankardstown, Barony of Cushma, Killmallock, Co. Limerick. He is farming 89 acres of land;

    Patrick Carroll in the same townland is farming 91 acres and Edward Carroll is leasing a House and Garden from Patrick Carroll. There are two other Edward Carroll's in the County, but have only small land holdings.

    I suggest that you get the marriage certificate of Anne O'Carroll/Carroll which should show the names of her parents.

    The surname "Carroll" is a common name in County Limerick. The only O'Carroll I found was a Priest in Abbeyfeale, West County Limerick.

    Regards,

  • Appreciate the reply. I was able to fiind some cousins who have alot of information. I believe you were on the right track! Of noteable significance and Help was that her cousin Sean was a significant Limerick IRA figure.

  • You've posted really informative article. This movie is real, this book is real. The Quiet Man and its characters are real, based on my father’s and grandfather’s lives. In this manner, the story has taken on a life of its own that continues to spin off into other realms and you can try this out for frankenstein movie vs book there. So many people have written about what they thought were personal experiences as if they were facts. But these untruths misrepresent the truth in such an egregious way that I must now write this work in an effort to set the record straight.

  • Hi McCoy

    The O' Carrolls you speak about in Ballygubba South are still living there. So if they are related the father's name was Ivor I do not know his son's name but he would be into his 50's and has family.
