I have good records on the generations before and after my 2x great-grandfather O'Brien Keon, possibly born Denis Thomas O'Brien Keon, but I'm not able to locate birth, baptism, marriage, or death records for O'Brien himself.

O'Brien's grandparents: Ferdinand Keon (1793-1876) (in Kellybrook?) and Margaret Isabella Plunkett (1795-1862), married on Aug. 3, 1814. I've seen mentions of Kellybrook, Keonbrook, Newbrook for both Ferdinand and Margaret.

O'Brien's parents: William Plunkett Keon (1816-1886) (in Keonbrook?), and Lucy O'Brien (1819-unknown), married on March 29, 1840, at St. Michan's in Dublin. Many on ancestry.com are incorrectly co-mingling details about William Plunkett Keon with Ferdinand William Plunkett Keon (1819-1854) who married Maria de Blaquiere in 1847.

O'Brien Keon: (unknown-died after 1905) married Mary Teresa Ryan (1847-unknown) on October 29, 1873, at St. Agatha's in Dublin. If we split the difference between O'Brien's fathers birth year of 1816 and O'Brien's eldest child's birth year of 1874, there are 29-year gaps in either direction, making his birth year range, say, 1840-1850?

O'Brien and Lucy's children: Mary Josephine Rose Keon (1874-unknown), Lucy Constance Maria Keon (1875-1952), William Charles Keon (1877-unknown), Michael O'Brien Keon (1878-unknown), Mary Beatrice Keon (1879-unknown), Hubert Keon (1881-1881). I'm descended from Lucy Constance Maria who married Gilbert Cluffe (1868-1938) in 1897 and moved their family to Quebec in 1907.

Hopefully I've provided enough information about this mystery, I appreciate any help that can be provided. If there is a need for records here in the USA, I'm happy to do all I can to help!

  • Hello Nancy,

In preliminary research I found copies of the original 29 October 1873 civil marriage record, as well as church marriage record for Thomas O’Brien Keon and Maria Teresa Ryan. I also uncovered a copy of the original 1875 baptism record for their daughter and your direct ancestor, Lucy. Her baptism record gives her name as, “Lucia Constantia Maria Keon.” I also found baptism records for other Keon children.

I can send you these records if you would like them after I hear from you. Once I receive your reply, I’ll look for more records this coming week.

    Thank you Nancy,

Thanks, Dave! I actually have all of those records already - the big problem is that I can't find so little about O'Brien Keon himself. Once his details are verified, the older generations, of which I have decent details, can be added to my tree with certainty. I'm cautious about adding relatives to the tree without decent proof first.

For his children's records, his name is seen in all kinds of combinations like Dynosius O'B Keon, Dionysius T. Keon, Denis Thomas O'Brien Keon, etc. If it wasn't for thoes records, though, I wouldn't have any clues at all!

I'm starting to wonder if O'Brien was born in Ireland but there are lots of crumbs that show he made his life in Ireland and likely died there after 1905. I actually found a death record on ancestry for Thomas O'Brien Koen, I think this is probably him. He is listed as a widower upon his death, so I need to dig harder to learn when Mary Teresa Ryan passed away. If it was before 1910, then these misspelled death records are likely my O'Brien Keon.

Still, given the documentation about the relatives of Ferdinand Keon and William Plunkett Keon, I'm surprised there aren't records to be found for O'Brien's birth or baptism. On ancestry.com, I definitely have DNA matches to other descendants of Ferdinand and William so I'm encouraged I'm on the right branch of the tree.

  • Amazing - a big mystery has been solved, I'm so grateful you found this! You taught me something so valuable today - had I tried to collect the details on Hubert Keon, their child, who I knew passed away in infancy, I would have seen Mary Teresa's death record right along with Hubert's.

This is sad stuff - I have Hubert Keon's birth record from April 12, 1881. I'm learning for the first time that Mary Teresa gave birth to Hubert and passed away 6 days later, Hubert then passed away at 2 weeks of age. You can see both of their death records together in your find. For Hubert's birth record, Lucy Keon is listed as present at Hubert's birth and here we can see Lucy was present at Hubert and Mary Teresa's deaths. I've kept a record of all the addresses along the way and 4 Cloniffe Terrace is present in other records. You definitely found the right people.

ll this makes me want to learn about O'Brien Keon even more.

    Thank you so, so much!

  • At last, I found the records I was seeking for so long! I have a subscription to britishnewspapers.com and found O'Brien Keon's death record published in 1910. It mentioned that he was at Glasnevin. I purchased his burial record which provided the names of those buried with him. That one purchase unlocked so many answers of what happened toward the end of his life.

    Brick wall smashed at last,
