Hello, I would like to find information on my great great grandfather, Timothy O'Connell. I believe he is from Cork, Co.  His son, Timothy, my great great grandfather immigrated to the U.S. sometime in the mid mid 1860s to 1870s. He was married to Catherine Hoar, also from Ireland. They live in Maine, primarily Lewiston. Getting further info. on this lineage would be appreciated. Thank you. Maureen

    Maureen,

A search of Subscription site  www.rootsireland.ie did not show any record for the marrriage of a Timothy O'Connell (Connell) to Catherine Hoar (Hoare) in the years 1850 to 1870.

Free site  www.askaboutireland.ie  - property records - did show a Timothy O'Connell in Cork City c1850. He was the only one found with an O.  All others were "Connell's".about 90!

Perhaps you can get records of Timothy and Catherine that might narrow down their origin.

Civil records in Ireland are from January 1st 1864 (Roman Catholic). Marriages from 1845 to 1864 are mainly Protestant.

Attached is the record of the Timothy O'Connell in Cork city - Griffith's Valuation - Printed 1852.

    Regards,

    McCoy

  • Maureen:

Following up on McCoy's comments, can you clarify if the O'Connell/Hoar marriage was in America or Ireland.

An approximate year of birth for the younger Timothy would be helpful but having his mother's maiden name is likely needed to find the correct baptismal record if it is available. The Co. Cork baptismal records are split between the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie (Diocese of Cork and Ross) and the subscription site Roots Ireland (Diocese of Cloyne. I located approximately 100 Timothy Connell baptismal records (with father Timothy) in Co. Cork between 1830-1860.

  • I think I've possibly narrowed it down. There was a Timothy and Ctherine married in Innishanon, Ireland, Diocese of Cork and Ross. It does no give bride's maiden name which should be Hoar. Marriage took place in 1839. I can find his arrival in New York in 1849 but can't find wife. They were in Maine according to 1860 census. Now to attempt locating parents of both Timothy and Catherine. Any thoughts on where to go from here?  Thank you. Maureen

  • Maureen:

I looked at the 1839 marriage in Innishannon. It was not unusual for the bride and the groom to have the same last name particularly where a surname was very prevalent in a particular area.

  • Thank you, Roger, but I do know that Catherine's maiden name was Hoar. I'm going to attempt looking at ship maifests to see if she came over under her maiden name. Not sure that's the case but worth checking. Thanks for the hwlp. Appreciate. Maureen

  • I have confirmed that Timothy and Catherine married in Maine. It seems he may have arrived in 1849 and she in 1852. He was naturalized in 1858 but I can't find anything about her naturalization. I know he was from Cork because of his obituary. I can't narrow down where.  Other than Cork I have a date of about 1831 for his birth. And for his wife, Catheine Hoar a possible birth date of 1839 and possible parents James Hoar and Mary Lyons. Not sure of county for her. Kind of a dead end.

I have a lead for a baptismal record for Catherine Hoare. The free site www.irishgenealogy.ie has an August 19 1830 baptismal record for a Catherine Hoare father James Hoare and mother M. A.Lyne (as transcribed). The parish was Annascaul in Co. Kerry. The family lived in Ballynahunt townland in Ballinvoher civil parish which is located on the eastern end of the Dingle Peninsula.

I looked at the actual parish register entry and I can see Lyons instead of Lyne. Take a look.

Did not locate a marriage record. There was a baptismal record for a sister Elizabeth May 27 1833 Same parents. Mother shown as MA Lyne.
