  • Mintoe,

Tithe records for County Waterford have a John O'Dell in Killosserra, Dungarvan, C. Waterford in 1829.

Irish Ancestors  www.irishancestors.com  have the surname "O'Dell" with variants, showing "Head of Household" for the years 1851-1853, mainly in County Cork. One is recorded for Charleville, Co. Cork which is only a short distance from Ballingarry.

  • Hi Mintoe

I think this name came into Ireland in Cromwellian Times and certainly the O'Dell from Ballingarry certainly did. They were extensive land holders in Co. Limerick and lived in the Castle in Ballingarry, Co. Limerick but I always thought that they came from Waterford. In the 1800 's a Thomas O dell was trying to get sponsership from the government to emigrate to Canada and bring about 100 people with him.
