I am new at this, but I was wondering if there is any information on the O'Hara family from Killoe, Longford?  My great great grandfather's obit mentioned he is from Killoe, Longford, Ireland.  His name was Michael O'Hara.  He immigrated to New Orleans, Louisiana (USA) I suspect during the potato famine.

  • Hi Karen,

Subscription site - www.rootsireland.ie - has a record of Matthew O'Hara being baptised in Killoe RC Church on February 5th 1826. Father: Matthew O'Hara and Mother: Bridget Clarke. Similar entry for Michael O'Hara baptised on July 18th 1831.

You should be able to access those records at  catholicparishrecords@nli.ie - National Library.

No record of the marriage of Matthew O'Hara and Bridget Clarke found.

You may be able to get further information in the land records - Tithe Records - 1823 to 1837 for the parish of Killoe - www.nationalarchives.ie - and Griffith's Valuation 1840/50 - www.askaboutireland.ie.

    Regards,

  • Thank you so much for responding to my request.  I'm not sure about the year of birth, because he died in New Orleans, Louisiana on November 18, 1870 and they listed his age as 65.  However, some of the census listings have him listed as younger on some and older on others.  He married Catherine O'Brien in New Orleans.  .They had children named Edward, James, John, and Mary O'Hara - all born in New Orleans.  Are there any lists regarding who emigrated from Kiloe in the 1800s?  Do you know how many families were named O'Hara residing in Kiloe back in the 1800s?

I appreciate very much your kindness in reponding to my inquiry.  Thanks again.

  • Karen:

In addition to the baptismal records for Matthew and Michael Clarke that McCoy highlighted, there was a twin to Matthew named Martha and another sister Brigid baptized June 15 1827.

The Killoe RC parish records start January 1 1826  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0172  so possibly there were older children and the marriage was likely in the parish but occurred before 1826.

The 1853 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Killoe civil parish showed 17 O'Hara households in the parish. Matthew O'Hara was not listed but there was a Bridget O'Hara in Bawn townland. Possibly Matthew was deceased pre-1853 and Bridget took over the lease.

There were 14 O'Hara households in Killoe parish in the 1901 census.including three households in Bawn   http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Longford/Breanrisk/Baw…
