Hello, I wish the app would allow me to post a photo but it doesn’t seem to allow me to do so. I have a baptism record for Bridget Mulkeen. September 1853. The world Olim is crossed out and there is an another word and then Mulkeen. What does this translate to? What does this mean? I believe based upon other records that Bridget was born prior to her parents (James Mulkeen and Mary Lyons) married in. Another researcher told me that if a child was born out of wedlock the mother and child would of been sent to Magdelane Landries? However they (James and Mary) went on to have a family. Very confused Sarah

    As Roger noted, "olim" equals "formerly" or "once." In this record, olim is crossed out and "nunc," meaning now or at present is subsituted. So it says that the mother's name is now Mulkeen.

    What do you make of this? Is it possible the record changed after the baptism ? It's the only one on the page like this, and the only one I have seen. The only marriage record for James and Mary I could find (via Roots) is for 1854. This would be several months after the birth.

    Any  insight is greatly appreciated.

  • The priest crossed out "olim" meaning formerly and replaced it with "nunc" meaning now. Usually the mother's maiden surname followed "olim".  The word "conjugum" after the bracket means married. Compare the format with other baptisms on those pages. Either the priest made a mistake with surnames and made a correction or he wrote inside the bracket later.  Perhaps James and Mary were betrothed when Bridget was born but James was away and they intended to marry when he returned. What was James' occupation?
