Hello,

I am looking for any information about Olivia Mary or Mary Olivia Innis  (or Innes or Ines).

Olivia was born in County Antrim, Ireland in 1795/6-1798. She married Samuel Sturgeon from Aghaloo parish, Tyrone sometime before 1820 when they were living in New Brunswick, Canada. From there they moved to Pennsylvania and finally to Iowa where Olivia died in 1875.

Samuel and Olivia's children were named Samuel Robert Ines born 1822 in Maine, William John, Edward Lindsey, Mary Jane, Sarah B, Susan M, Jeremiah Candee, and Elizabeth Ellen. The family had a tradition of using the mothers' maiden names as middle names for their sons so I suspect Olivia and Samuel's mothers' maiden names were Candee and Lindsay.

Thank-you,

Kathy

  • Kathy,

You don’t say what denomination Olivia was but judging by the predominant denomination of Innes (and variant spellings)  households in Co. Antrim in the 1901 census, Presbyterian seems most likely.

Research in the 1700s in Ireland can be tricky.  There were at least 100 Presbyterian churches in County Antrim in the 1700s, but only about 8 of them have any baptism or marriage records from that period. (Presbyterians generally didn’t keep burial records either). Without knowing where in the county she came from it would be difficult enough but when you add to that the fact that there are no church records for the 1700s for over 90% of the churches she might have attended, it becomes pretty well impossible.

Not sure about the surname Candee. There isn’t anyone of that name (or at least that spelling) anywhere in Ireland in Griffiths Valuation or the 1901 census. It’s not a name I have come across either in Ireland or in Scotland. Lindsay is common enough though, and points to Presbyterian origins.

Possibly DNA testing might be the only way to link up with any Irish (or, ultimately, Scottish) roots.

  • Thank-you Elwyn. I know very little about Olivia unfortunately. She married a Presbyterian minister so I agree she was likely Presbyterian. Olivia is in my father's maternal line. I'm hoping he'll use the autosomal DNA test kit I got for him. Maybe that will help.
