Looking for information on my great grandparent, Michael O'Malley and his wife, Bridget (Prenderghast).  Michael was the son of John O'Malley and Mary O'Halloran born in 1857.  Bridget was the daughter of Patrick Prenderghast and Mary Connelly.  She was born in 1862.  They went to America and settled in Boston around 1886, when their first child was born.  Any information would be appreciated.  Thank you!

  • Hi there,

I can highly recommend a publication on a website you should look at: http://www.clifden2012.org/publications/tracing-your-roots-guide.html

You should check the 1901 and 1911 census (freely available online). Try checking the land records called Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) (found here: www.askaboutireland.com) and the earlier Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) for additional information.

If you know about when they emigrated and which port they arrived at, you should be able to find more data. Information was generally given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure.

Hopefully someone in the Clifden area will be able to offer you more assistance as well.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney
