Hello all,

I'm looking for some help with my O'Reilly ancestors.  Thomas O'Reilly was born in Edendugally  (Edennagully) circa Nov. 1808.  Supposedly he was the 7th child of a family of 8.  He married Bridget Sheridan in 1836.  I do not know where Bridget was born.  They had their first child, Elizabeth, in 1838.  Second child was Edward, born 1839.  Their third child, Anne, was born sometime between 1841-1843.

They left Ireland in 1849 in route to New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.  There they had a fourth child named James P. O'Reilly (b. 1849) and a 5th named John O'Reilly (b. 1854). They moved to Washington Louisiana a few years later and settled there.

US Catholic Church records show that “Thomas O'Reilly died 14 Sept 1884 at 76 yrs. 6 mths. Born at Edendugally, County Cavan, Ireland."

I don't have any information regarding Thomas or Bridget's parents.  I've also not been successful in finding any records regarding their marriage or birth of their children in Ireland.  Given the small size of Edendugally, and knowing that Reilly families were still in that area in the 1850's (at least according to the records I've seen), I can't help but wonder if they are related.

This has been a brick wall for me the last few years.  I’ve only recently devoted my efforts to researching this family line.  Apologize in advance for any spelling or grammatical mistakes!

Any help would be appreciated.  I recently joined the group and I’ve only added one ancestor so far.  Waiting for it to be approved before adding the others!

Thanks,

Jon

  • Hi Jon,

You may already be aware that Reilly/O'Reilly was & still is a very popular name is Co. Cavan.  Edenagully is in East Cavan, close to the Meath & Monaghan Counties.  You are fortunate that you have the record of where Thomas was born as frequently records would not go back that far here to give you that information.  Do not worry about spelling as there subtle changes occurred over the years.  I checked Roots Ireland, but their marriage was not listed. There is a website that covers that area, they have a 'contact us' page, I am not too sure how active they are on it, but you will find some stories and information about the area at http://www.loughanleagh.com

People from this area may have been buried in the old graveyard at Enniskeen, but many stones are badly weathered and any transcriptions that survive are listed here https://kingscourtparish.ie/phooriss/2011/05/Graveyard-Headstone-Data.p…  Some photos of the headstones can be found here https://kingscourtparish.ie/2011/05/conservation-of-enniskeen-graveyard/  There is a 'new' graveyard in Kingscourt but no transcription is available for it.

Another graveyard that you could peruse is in Moybologue volunteers transcribed the graves and they are found at  https://historicgraves.com/graveyard/moybologue-old/cv-mool

Do search the free resources at https://genealogy.nationalarchives.ie look for wills etc and also look at https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp, search for deaths, ok catholic registrations did not start until 1864, but you are looking for Reilly & its variations for their townland and also look for Sheridans, very often people married their next door neighbours. Bailieborough is the SR District/Reg Area that you need to concentrate on.  Pay attention to similar names that are in your family as many families followed a naming pattern and the first names repeated down through the generations.  Have you looked at family that may have joined them later as often chain migration took place, this may help you widen the family base and take you back further.

I have looked at some of the land records and in Griffiths Vauation for Edennagully http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNam…  There are two listings for Reillys none for Sheridan but this family may be in a neighbouring townland, this survey would have been taken around the years your family had left.  You could write to the local paper The Anglo-Celt and in particular to jimporeilly@eircom.net he is the correspondent for the Kingscourt News, you can ask him to publish your request, if you have photos they do attract attention.

You can also engage the services for a fee with Genealogy Centre Contact Details

They will detail what they can do and the cost of same.

I hope I have given you some direction and that someone can help you find your family.  Best wishes Carmel O'Callaghan

  • Hi Jon,

My Grandmother was Ellen Reilly (1896) from Edennagully, Cavan. Her father was Phillip Reilly (1840) and her grandfather was Charlie Reilly (unknown). There was another Reilly family that lived beside them but they are not related that they know of.  Because there were so many families of the same surname, they had nicknames.  Our family was known as the Ban's or the Culban's.

    Regards,

    Marian

  • According to RootsIreland a Thomas Reilly and Bridget Sheridan had at least three children baptized in the Catholic parish of Kingscourt, Co. Cavan, as follows.

    Reilly Anne 1839 Co. Cavan
    Reilly James 1845 Co. Cavan
    Reilly Bridget 1848 Co. Cavan
