I am now back on this website after a long reprieve. I am now looking for Owen Connors (last known location) who married Catherine Rourke in the RC Parish of Liscarrol in the Cloyne Diocese. All records of their children are from the same ROMAN CATHOLIC diocese.

Baptisms

23 Aug 1818-Daniel- Ballyclough and Kilbrin

7 May 1820-Julia- Ballyclough and Kilbrin

8 Sep 1822-Edmond-Kanturk and Cooleavota. Address is Bawnmore

24 Apr 1824-William-Kanturk and Cooleavota. Address is Bawnmore

1826-Maybe a missing child here I have been unable to find.

9 May 1828-Patrick-Kanturk and Cooleavota. Address is Lackaleigh.

2 May 1830-Henry-Kanturk and Cooleavota

26 Sep 1832-Catherine-Kanturk and Cooleavota

9 Nov 1834-Ellen-Kanturk and Cooleavota.

I am lucky enough to have at 2 townland names. I am pretty sure I found Owen in the Tithe Applotment Books living in Bawnmore or Banemore which I think is in the Civil Parish of Kilbrin. There is only ONE Lackaleigh in the Civil Parish of Subulter. After this the family seems to have disappeared. I am hard pressed to believe that after 1834 they had no more children. Did Catherine die? Or did they just move and I can't find them? I have used "Roots Ireland" and can't find any more children. I have also use "SWilson's" to reference Civil Parishes, Catholic Parishes and Townlands. SWilson's site states that the Civil Parishes associated with the Roman Catholic Parish of Kanturk are Clonfert, Kilcorcoran and Kilroe, but the only Bawnmore I can find is in the Civil Parish of Kilbrin. I'm not sure what to do next given that Griffith's in Cork was done in 1851 and 1852 and that's a lot of years with nothing in between. Any help you can give me would be apprciated. Correct any of the "facts" I have posed if I am in error and please point me in the right direction. I would like to make a trip to Ireland this August and meet any family I have there. Henry is the only one I know of that came to the US.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Connors Hartley

  • Kathleen:

It is not surprising that there were no children after Ellen since there is a 16 year period where Catherine had children.

Kilbrin parish is real close to Clonfert, Kilcorcoran and Kilroe. It would not be unusual for someone living in Bawnmore Kilbrin parish to attend Kanturk parish.

We have very little info on families between the period of the Tithes (late 1820s/early 1830s) until the Griffiths unless you can find a church baptismal record.

We don't know when the Tithe listing was prepared. Owen Connors in Bawnmore was leasing three acres of land at the time of the Tithes. What event occured to cause him to move to Lackaleigh?

Civil registration of deaths did not start until 1864 and very few RC parishes kept death info pre-1864.

Owen Connors either died before the Griffiths or he lost his holding.

I checked for civil death records from 1864-1880 on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie and there were no Owen Connors record in the Kanturk registration district. There are a few Catherine Connors records in the 1864-1870 period that possibly could be for your ancestor but until the site adds the images for those years, we can't confirm.

The 1901 census had one Connors family in Lackaleigh townland  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Castlecor/Lackale…

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Thanks for getting back with me so quickly and giving me your thoughts.

Here are some of the thoughts I had. Either Catherine or Owen could surely have died after 1834 and therefore there would be no more children. That would put them roughly in their 50's or so. I know the life expectancy was nowhere near what it now. I've considered that in 1845 when the Famine hit, there were too many deaths to count and that could surely have been a factor. I've considered what I have read about after the Tithe Apploment Books were done and there were Tithe Wars. Were people evicted if they couldn't pay their tithes or were they forced to move? Lackaleigh in the Parish of Subulter is very close to Kilbrin. Maybe they just moved there. Some of the kids would still have been young and where did they go?

I am going to get a map somehow that is very detailed of North West County Cork and in particular the Barony of Duhallow where I think all their lives were played out. I have books that have maps that are cross-referrenced with Civil and Catholic parishes. I don't have words to tell you how confusing that is. I have ALWAY been geographically challenged. I've tried and failed to figure out where I can get the above mentioned old OSI maps with the numbers on them that indicate who owned land and where that don't cost a fortune. Any ideas on that would be helpful. It would sure be nice if I knew that one of the Connors still there is looking for me. I would love to make a connection when I come this fall.

    Sincerely,

    Kathy

I'm not a map expert. The only maps that I know have info on who leased/owned what plots in a townland and how many acres, are the maps for the Griffiths Valuation. The Ask About Ireland site has the maps  https://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/    From personal experience, it takes some time to understand the site but the maps are there.
