My great grandparents Thomas Duffy from Killcurry and Brigid McArdle from Lurgankeel were married in the Roman Catholic Chapel of Killcurry on April 23, 1873.  Both fathers were named Pat.  Pat McArdle is listed as a Tailor...or is he a sailor?  There is a Patrick McArdle baptised on 31 March 1831 in St. Patrick's, Dundalk....parents are Patrick McArdle and Mary Coulter.  can anyone provide me with more...or better information?

  • Hi, A look at the register on irishgenealogy.ie and the registrar's Ts and Ss show that the word is tailor not sailor.

  • Christine, there are a few Thomas Duffy's born 1840 to 1856 in Louth, father is Patt and this spelling often does not come back as a variant of Patrick or Pat in search engines. The most likely one appears to be Thomas born in 1851 in Carrickedmond townland, Faughart parish, mother Mary Ward. I will give you the other ones later and check for Bridget's birth also to see if the ages coincide, have you an age from your Thomas's death certificate to give an indicator of a possible birth year.

Must go now as we have visitors arriving shortly, will add more later tonight.

  • Christine there are a nuumber of possible Thomas Duffy's and I see one in 1840 born in Kilcurly, baptism 1st October 1840, mother Mary Burke, also one in Balriggan, Dundalk, 1846, 17th December, mother Margaret McEnaney. You can see the entries on the free site Registers NLI here, The first guy in Faughart in 21 Sept 1851.

THere are a few Bridget McArdles father Pat, one in 1840 and one in 1853 in Dowdallshill, close enough, mother Murphy, oddly I did not find your one but will have another go tomorrow. Again do you have an age at death.

Here is a site to look at civil townlands in Ireland, select county and off you go.

  • Pat - Sorry to be slow in responding...I had to figure out how to get back to my initial message!

A family tree, completed by a 2nd cousin from Dundalk, reports that Thomas Duffy was born about 1851 - but doesn't say where. So based on this, I also think that his mother was Mary Ward.  The family grave records from St. Patrick's Cemetery shows his date of death as 1.5.1925 - and lists his age as 78 years....no birth date is given.  I don't have a birth certificate for him.

I have found in the Catholic Parish register for Armagh and Faughart the birth of Thomas on 9/21/ 1851 and a daughter Mary, 1849 - born to Mary and Thomas Duffy.

It's difficult finding records on these families!  For McArdle I keep getting confused with another Pat McArdle who was a sailor!

  • Hi Christine, sorry about my delay also, had family home after Christmas and only left yesterday, you can see a death entry for Thomas Duffy in 1925  here and see daughter in Law present at death in Doyles Fort Road, Dundalk. If we find the marriage with a father Thomas we could find a birth for her husband and mothers name.

Click on civil records on this site, search for Thomas Duffy death in 1925 and registration area Dundalk, there is only one.

https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ The church records are no good to you as they are only for Dublin; Cork and Kerry currently.

By the way my mothers surname was Thomas, unusual in Ireland, from Leitrim and prior to that Galway.
