I am new to Irish genealogy research and would appreciate guidance. I have a Patrick Banahan born May 1833 (I don't know his parents' names) died in Kentucky USA 1910.  His wife, Bridget (née Early) was born 24 November 1838 to Thomas Early and Bridget Welsh.  She died in Kentucky USA in 1920.  I feel that they were both from county Roscommon as I see both Banahan and Early families in that county. I would like to find out where exactly they were born.  They were Catholic and married in the US.  I cannot find any records in the US or online that give any information other than Ireland as their places of birth.  My funds are limited for research, so does anyone have recommended sites that I can search?  Thank you in advance.

  • I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and found three possible baptismal records for a Patrick Banahan/Banaghan/Bannehan. Keep in mind that some RC parishes in Co. Roscommon do not have records back to 1833. Also many immigrants adjusted the year and even the month and day of their birth.

April 4 1826 Roscommon RC parish father John and mother Margaret Hanly

January 18 1831 Strokestown RC parish father Patrick mother Winifred Feeny

March 2 1834 Strokestown RC parish father Patrick mother Mary Brenan

I was not able to find a Bridget Early baptismal record with the parents names you have listed. The surname Early/Earley is also found in Leitrim, Tyrone, Mayo and a few other counties.

I know you indicate that your research funds are limited but DNA testing might be helpful. DNA testing companies periodically have sales.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you so much for the quick response Mr. McDonnell.  I will definitely consider DNA testing and I will try the other counties for the Early family.

    Sincerely,
