Hello, Everyone!  This is my first attempt to research my Irish ancestry after 11 years focused on my tree in the States.  Mary Ann Kelly was born in Kilkenny according to her obituary. Birth year is approx. 1832. She was married to Patrick Barlow, born about 1824.  We are uncertain if they were married in Ireland or US as there were too many Barlows and Kellys to immigrate around that time to tell which they are for certain.  I suspect they were married in the States shortly after their arrival.  Their first child, also named Patrick, was born in 1853 in Illinois.  Patrick's (b 1824) parents may have been named Patrick and Ann but we don't think they left Ireland.

Any help whatsoever will be much appreciated,

Cathleen Barlow Strabala

  • Hi Cathleen

I found a Patrick Barlow born 31 Mar 1821 in the parish of St Johns, Kilkenny City. His parents were John and Elizabeth McGarry and his godparents were Edmund Fitzpatrick and Mary Murphy. I know the parents names are incorrect- what did you find that led you to believe maybe his parents were a Patrick and Anne? Just if it was a guess and not something concrete, I think this could very well be him- Barlow doesnt seem to be that common of a surname.

I located two other children of  John and Eliza:

Mary, born 6 Jun 1816, godparents were Sally Culehan and William McHugh

John, born 9 May 1824, godparents were John Doyle and Mary Murphy

I also found a Pat Barley born in Kilkenny in the same diocese of Ossory as abvoe, parish of Urlingford to Pat Barley and Anne Banan but he was born in 1845. I think the first Patrick is more likely.

  • Oh wait, just found a marraige record for Patrick Barlow and Mary Anne Kelly in the parish of St Marys, Kilkenny City, on 5 Nov 1851. This rules out the Patrick Barley of Urlingford option as he would have been too young, marraige witnessed by John Brien and Mary Anne Griffith. St Marys was likely Mary Anne Kelly's home parish.

I found three possible options for Mary Anne Kelly in the parish of St Marys, Kilkenny City:

Mary Kelly, born 23 Dec 1832, to Denis Kelly and Johanna Halloran

Mary Kelly, born 2 Oct 1829, to John Kelly and Mary Garner

Mary Kelly, born 26 Feb 1830, to Joseph Kelly and Anne Brennan

You can decide which is your one based on the names of Mary Anne's children, did she have any Denis or Joseph? Please message back if you decide which option is most likely and I'll see what I can find out about that couple and their other children.

Hope some of this has helped!

  • Patrick and Mary (Kelly) Barlow's children were Patrick, Jr.; John/Jack; Mary Anne; Joseph; Rose and James taken from Census records in 1860, 1870, and 1880.  Their son, Joseph, was my great-grandfather and his son, Joseph, was my grandfather.

As for documentation of Patrick or Mary's details (parents, birth dates, etc.) I have very little aside from what I have found in the newspapers and on headstones.

Thank you so much for your swift response.  I think I need something more definitive before I can make a certain step forward.  I'll stay in touch.

  • Hi Cathy,

So sorry for not repling sooner- I never even saw your reply until just now! I did some additional research today and thought i'd send on the following- you may have progressed in your search and already found these- but just in case:

This is the Roots Ireland transcription for what I though may have been Patrick Barlow's birth record:

    Name:Patrick BarlowDate of Birth:
    Date of Baptism:31-Mar-1821Address:Johns GreenParish/District:ST. JOHN'SGender:MaleCountyCo. Kilkenny

John Barlow and Elizabeth McGarry also had the following children:

The marraige record for Patrick and Mary Anne above in an earlier message nearly has to be them- Barlow is an unusual surname and the record is a good match for the details you mentioned. Then they would have married in 1851 and left for Illinois before 1853 so we would be looking just for a Patrick and Mary Barlow on passenger lists most likely unless there were additional children born in Ireland who died young. Mary Anne's parents are most likely Joseph Kelly and Anne Brennan  based on children's names.

    Name:Mary KellyDate of Birth:

I would recommend rootsireland.ie for researching your Irish roots- it has an excellent collection of parish registers. Whats especially useful for breaking down brick walls is studying godparents and witnesses to baptisms and marraiges. One of my cousins who has done extensive genealogy research says in the nineteenth century, witnesses to a marraige were mostly first cousins and godparents either siblings or in laws. Maiden names of godparents are nearly always given on the register.

Best of luck with your research,

    Alicia
