Hello,,

I am seeking birth information for Patrick Donovan, b. abt 1887 in Cork. Patrick was the last born child of John Donovan. John Donovan was from Slievedotia (townland). I have the baptismal records and civil records for all the children in the family, except for Patrick. My grandmother was one of the children, Catherine, b. 1880.  All of the children were born of John Donovan and Julia Hogan. However, Julia died in 1882, so she does not appear to be Patrick’s mother.  I have searched extensively for Patrick’s birth record to no avail.  He shows up on the 1901 census in the home in Slievedotia, with his father, John Donovan, and a sister Ellen. How do I find his record?  It may be that it was an illegitimate birth. If so, how would I find that record?  Thank you for your help.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I looked on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie for civil births from 1884-1888 in the Cork registration district. There were ten Patrick Donovan birth records but none had a father John. I then searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and found an 1885 baptismal record in Blarney RC parish. Whitechurch civil parish is covered by Blarney RC parish so this record would be a lead.

  • Thank you Roger. I have seen all of these records. There is nothing n the family history pointing to a Curtin as the mother.  Interestingly, I have many cousins from the Donovan family and none of the descendants will speak about Patrick’s mother, which is why I was thinking about the legitimacy of the birth.  Do you know how such births were handled in the records?

The civil birth records will show the name of the mother but no father's name is listed.

Baptismal records particularly in the 19th century will show Illegitimate.
