My wife's 2x great-grandfather Patrick Gibbons appears in Washington County, New York State, in 1863. His 1901 death certificate states his parents were William and Julia, but gives no place of origin in Ireland. An Irish researcher told me that he was likely from The Neale in Mayo, but had no documentation for this assertion. Patrick supposedly had a brother who went to England while their father remarried. Various New York census records list his approximate birth year as anywhere from 1833 to 1841. Does any of this very sparse information lead anywhere? Any information appreciated.

If your researcher is correct about the parish for Patrick Gibbons, no baptismal record will be available since the records for that parish start in 1870. There are a number of RC parishes in the west of Mayo and Galway which start much later than the 1830s.

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and found one family that I would consider a lead. The parents were William Gibbons and Julia Brogan and there parish was Balla which is about three parishes north of the Neale. Unfortunately, the records for this parish start in 1837 and the children I located of the aforementioned couple were: Bridget 1839 (she likely died in young) Michael 1840 Mary 1843 and the second Bridget in 1846, They lived in Lakeland townland in Manulla civil parish. Possibly Patrick was an older brother and baptized before records start in that parish.
